History of MedzilaborceDejiny — Medzilaborce

Medzilaborce stands at the top of the Laborec valley, a few kilometres short of the pass into Poland, and that position explains almost everything about it. The valley was settled late, by herding families moving along the Carpathian ridges; it was fought over twice within thirty years because armies coming this way had no other road; and it has been losing its people to emigration for a hundred and fifty years. One of those emigrant families produced Andy Warhol — which is why a Carpathian border town of a few thousand people owns a museum of American pop art.Medzilaborce ležia v hornej časti doliny Laborca, pár kilometrov pod priesmykom do Poľska, a táto poloha o nich vysvetľuje takmer všetko. Dolinu osídlili neskoro pastierske rodiny putujúce po karpatských hrebeňoch; dvakrát za tridsať rokov sa o ňu bojovalo, lebo armády tadiaľto nemali kadiaľ inadiaľ prejsť; a stopäťdesiat rokov tu ubúdajú ľudia, ktorí odchádzajú za prácou. Z jednej takej vysťahovaleckej rodiny pochádza Andy Warhol — a práve preto má niekoľkotisícové mesto na karpatskej hranici múzeum amerického pop-artu.

In the second half of the fifteenth century a wave of settlement known as the Vlach colonisation moved along the Carpathian ridges — herding families, here mostly Rusyn, who took land that lay too high and too poor for wheat and lived off sheep, cattle and the forest. Medzilaborce is one of the villages that came out of it. The town takes 1523 as its first appearance in a document, while the standard dictionary of Slovak settlements records the form Mezeulaborc in 1557, when ten taxed holdings stood here. It was nobody's independent place: it belonged to the great Humenné estate of the Drugeth family, who held most of this corner of the kingdom.V druhej polovici 15. storočia sa po karpatských hrebeňoch šírila valaská kolonizácia — pastierske rodiny, tu prevažne rusínske, ktoré brali pôdu položenú privysoko a prichudobnú na obilie a živili sa ovcami, dobytkom a lesom. Samostatné to nebolo: obec patrila veľkému humenskému panstvu Drugetovcov, ktorí držali väčšinu tohto kúta kráľovstva.

  2. 16841684 The Drugeths end, the Csákys take overDrugetovci končia, panstvo preberajú Čákiovci

The end of the seventeenth century in Upper Hungary was one long civil war. Imrich Thököly's revolt against the Habsburg emperor — Hungarian nobles fighting Vienna with Ottoman backing — rolled through these counties in the 1680s, and armies of both sides lived off the villages they passed through. In the middle of it, in 1684, the Humenné estate passed from the Drugeths to the Csáky family, and Medzilaborce with it. To the people here the change of landlord mattered far less than the war: a valley on the road to a mountain pass was the wrong place to own a cow.

  3. 1715 · 17871715 · 1787 More empty houses than lived-in onesViac prázdnych domov ako obývaných

The census taken in 1715, just after Rákóczi's uprising had been put down, counted eighteen lived-in holdings in Medzilaborce, thirty-nine standing empty and two mills. That ratio is the whole story of the region after a generation of war, requisitioning and plague. Recovery took most of the century: by 1787 there were 106 houses and 719 people, working thin fields and the forest. Nothing about the place yet suggested a town.Súpis z roku 1715, urobený krátko po potlačení Rákócziho povstania, napočítal v Medzilaborciach osemnásť obývaných usadlostí, tridsaťdeväť opustených a dva mlyny. Zotavovanie trvalo takmer celé storočie: roku 1787 tu už bolo 106 domov a 719 obyvateľov, ktorí obrábali chudobné polia a chodili do lesa. Nič na tom mieste zatiaľ nenaznačovalo mesto.

  4. 1848 · 1851 · 18591848 · 1851 · 1859 The right to hold a fairPrávo na jarmoky

In 1848 serfdom was abolished across the kingdom. The families here stopped owing labour to a landlord and became owners of the strips they worked — usually strips far too small to live on. What changed Medzilaborce more was a permission granted in 1859 to hold regular fairs. A fair meant that the villages of the upper Laborec came here to buy and sell instead of going somewhere else, and from that point the place began to grow into a small town rather than one more village. In 1851 it had 724 inhabitants.

Under Austria-Hungary the estate was in the hands of the Andrássy family, but the thing that changed the valley was built by the state: a railway up the Laborec from Humenné, opened in the early 1870s and pushed on through a tunnel to the Polish side. In 1878 the Greek Catholic parish built the church of St Basil the Great. The town grew to 1,561 people by 1910 — and yet the district could not feed its own families, so from the 1880s the Rusyn villages emptied westward across the Atlantic, to the coal mines and steel mills of Pennsylvania. Ondrej Varchola, from Miková fifteen kilometres away, sailed for Pittsburgh in 1912.Za Rakúsko-Uhorska držali panstvo Andrášiovci, no dolinu zmenilo to, čo postavil štát: železnica popri Laborci z Humenného, otvorená začiatkom sedemdesiatych rokov a dotiahnutá tunelom až na poľskú stranu.

  6. February – May 1915február – máj 1915 The Russians hold the townMesto v ruských rukách

The First World War arrived here immediately and stayed. Russian armies pushed over the Carpathian passes in the winter of 1914–15, and from February to May 1915 Medzilaborce was in Russian hands; General Brusilov used the town as a headquarters. The winter battles for these ridges cost enormous numbers of lives for a few valleys, and the fighting wrecked the settlements underneath them. The military cemetery in the town holds 1,692 soldiers — four Germans and 1,688 men of the Austro-Hungarian and Russian armies, buried in the same ground. Small walled cemeteries like it lie in almost every village around.Prvá svetová vojna sem prišla hneď a zostala.

  7. 1918 · 19221918 · 1922 A Rusyn district inside CzechoslovakiaRusínsky okres v Československu

In 1918 the monarchy collapsed and Medzilaborce became part of Czechoslovakia. For a Rusyn town that was not a simple answer: further east the new state created a whole province, Subcarpathian Ruthenia, and Rusyn leaders asked for the Rusyn districts of eastern Slovakia to be joined to it. They were not, and Medzilaborce has been a Rusyn town inside Slovakia ever since. The town rebuilt what the war had wrecked — a steam sawmill started in 1922 — and in one of the poorest districts of the republic a local Communist Party organisation was founded the same year. Mesto obnovilo, čo vojna rozbila — roku 1922 tu začala pracovať parná píla — a v jednom z najchudobnejších okresov republiky vznikla v tom istom roku aj miestna organizácia komunistickej strany.

In the autumn of 1944 the front came back over the same ridges. On 21 September 1944 Soviet troops took Kalinov, a village of this district — the first place on Czechoslovak soil to be liberated in the war, and it is remembered here for that. The fighting then ground on for weeks. German troops burned Borov, today part of the town: 53 houses destroyed and 33 badly damaged. Medzilaborce itself was taken on 26 November 1944, and the battle for it left the town wrecked. Nemeckí vojaci vypálili Borov, dnes časť mesta: 53 domov zničených a 33 ťažko poškodených. Samotné Medzilaborce padli 26. novembra 1944 a boj o ne nechal mesto v troskách.

  9. 28 April 1950 · 196028. apríla 1950 · 1960 The Greek Catholic Church is abolishedZrušená gréckokatolícka cirkev

Communist rule hit this district in a way it did not hit western Slovakia. On 28 April 1950 a staged assembly in Prešov declared the Greek Catholic Church in Czechoslovakia dissolved, the old union with Rome void, and its parishes handed over to the Orthodox Church. Priests who refused lost their parishes and many went to prison, among them the bishop of Prešov, Pavol Gojdič, who died in jail. The ban lasted until 1968, and it is the reason why the churches of these valleys are Orthodox or Greek Catholic today for reasons of politics as much as of faith. In 1960 the state also closed the district office at Medzilaborce and the town lost the jobs that went with it.Komunistická moc dopadla na tento okres inak než na západné Slovensko. 28. apríla 1950 vyhlásilo zinscenované zhromaždenie v Prešove gréckokatolícku cirkev v Československu za rozpustenú, starú úniu s Rímom za zrušenú a jej farnosti odovzdalo pravoslávnej cirkvi. Kňazi, ktorí odmietli, prišli o farnosti a mnohí išli do väzenia — medzi nimi prešovský biskup Pavol Gojdič, ktorý vo väzení zomrel.

Andy Warhol died in New York in 1987 without ever having seen the village his parents left. Four years later, and two years after the fall of communism, a museum of his work opened here. It was founded on 1 September 1991 and opened to the public on 5 October 1991, put together by his brother John Warhola, the art historian Michal Bycko, Fred Hughes of the Warhol estate and Vladimír Protivňák, with works given and lent by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts; the first thirteen originals arrived on 9 September 1991. Putting a collection of American pop art in a Carpathian border town was a deliberate decision, and it worked.Andy Warhol zomrel v New Yorku roku 1987, bez toho aby kedy videl dedinu, z ktorej odišli jeho rodičia. Umiestniť zbierku amerického pop-artu do karpatského pohraničného mesta bolo vedomé rozhodnutie — a vyšlo.

  11. 1996 · today1996 · dnes A small town the world has heard ofMalé mesto, o ktorom svet vie

In independent Slovakia the district office came back in 1996, but the deeper trend did not change: the Medzilaborce district is one of the smallest and least populated in the country, steady work is scarce, and many households live on wages earned in Czechia, Britain or Germany. The museum — around 160 works and objects, with a small open-air section holding a replica of the Warhola family house from Miková — is the town's one national institution and its main reason for visitors. Rusyn identity, suppressed for forty years, was recognised again after 1989 and a written standard for the language followed in the 1990s. A few thousand people keep a museum of pop art alive at the top of a Carpathian valley, and everyone here knows how odd that is.V samostatnom Slovensku sa okresný úrad vrátil roku 1996, hlbší trend to však nezmenilo: okres Medzilaborce patrí k najmenším a najredšie osídleným v krajine, stálej práce je málo a mnohé domácnosti žijú zo mzdy zarobenej v Česku, Británii či Nemecku. Múzeum — asi 160 diel a predmetov a malý skanzen s replikou rodného domu Warholovcov z Mikovej — je jedinou celoštátnou inštitúciou mesta a hlavným dôvodom, prečo sem ľudia chodia.
