Under Austria-Hungary the estate was in the hands of the Andrássy family, but the thing that changed the valley was built by the state: a railway up the Laborec from Humenné, opened in the early 1870s and pushed on through a tunnel to the Polish side. In 1878 the Greek Catholic parish built the church of St Basil the Great. The town grew to 1,561 people by 1910 — and yet the district could not feed its own families, so from the 1880s the Rusyn villages emptied westward across the Atlantic, to the coal mines and steel mills of Pennsylvania. Ondrej Varchola, from Miková fifteen kilometres away, sailed for Pittsburgh in 1912.Za Rakúsko-Uhorska držali panstvo Andrášiovci, no dolinu zmenilo to, čo postavil štát: železnica popri Laborci z Humenného, otvorená začiatkom sedemdesiatych rokov a dotiahnutá tunelom až na poľskú stranu.
