February – May 1915 The Russians hold the townMesto v ruských rukách

The First World War arrived here immediately and stayed. Russian armies pushed over the Carpathian passes in the winter of 1914–15, and from February to May 1915 Medzilaborce was in Russian hands; General Brusilov used the town as a headquarters. The winter battles for these ridges cost enormous numbers of lives for a few valleys, and the fighting wrecked the settlements underneath them. The military cemetery in the town holds 1,692 soldiers — four Germans and 1,688 men of the Austro-Hungarian and Russian armies, buried in the same ground. Small walled cemeteries like it lie in almost every village around.Prvá svetová vojna sem prišla hneď a zostala. Ruské armády sa v zime 1914 – 1915 pretlačili cez karpatské priesmyky a od februára do mája 1915 boli Medzilaborce v ruských rukách; generál Brusilov mal v meste veliteľstvo. Zimné boje o tieto hrebene stáli obrovské množstvo životov za pár dolín a osady pod nimi rozbili. Na vojenskom cintoríne v meste leží 1 692 vojakov — štyria Nemci a 1 688 mužov rakúsko-uhorskej a ruskej armády, pochovaní v jednej zemi. Podobné malé ohradené cintoríny sú takmer v každej okolitej dedine.
