The census taken in 1715, just after Rákóczi's uprising had been put down, counted eighteen lived-in holdings in Medzilaborce, thirty-nine standing empty and two mills. That ratio is the whole story of the region after a generation of war, requisitioning and plague. Recovery took most of the century: by 1787 there were 106 houses and 719 people, working thin fields and the forest.
