After 1867 the kingdom of Hungary ran its own internal affairs inside the dual monarchy, and it pushed hard to make Hungarian the language of schools and offices — in a district where almost nobody spoke it at home. The railway from Prešov reached Bardejov in 1893, and the spa hit its peak: twelve hundred rooms and something like four thousand guests a season. Empress Elisabeth, the Sisi of the picture books, took the cure here in 1895, and a statue of her stood in front of the bath house from 1903. Meanwhile Šariš was among the poorest counties in the whole kingdom and one of the heaviest sources of emigrants in Europe: tens of thousands of people from these hills left for the mines and steel mills of Pennsylvania and Ohio. The same poverty that filled the American mills is why the villages around here never rebuilt their wooden churches in stone.Po roku 1867 si Uhorsko v rámci dvojitej monarchie riadilo vnútorné veci samo a tvrdo presadzovalo maďarčinu ako jazyk škôl a úradov — v okrese, kde ňou doma nehovoril takmer nikto. V roku 1893 dorazila do Bardejova železnica z Prešova a kúpele dosiahli vrchol: dvanásťsto izieb a asi štyritisíc hostí za sezónu. V roku 1895 sa tu liečila cisárovná Alžbeta, Sisi z obrázkových kníh, a od roku 1903 stála pred liečebným domom jej socha. Šariš bol pritom jednou z najchudobnejších stolíc kráľovstva a jedným z najsilnejších zdrojov vysťahovalcov v Európe: desaťtisíce ľudí z týchto kopcov odišli do baní a oceliarní v Pensylvánii a Ohiu. Tá istá chudoba, ktorá plnila americké huty, je dôvod, prečo si dediny v okolí nikdy nepostavili murované kostoly namiesto drevených.
