The revolutionary year of 1848 abolished serfdom across the kingdom. In the Šariš hills that meant the villagers finally owned the strips they worked — but the strips were small and the soil was thin, and a family holding could only be divided so many times. Remember that when the emigration starts a generation later. Up at the spa the mood was very different: by the middle of the century close to a thousand families a season were taking the waters, the composer Béla Kéler kept a house there from 1850 until his death in 1882, and when a fire destroyed much of the resort in 1856 it was simply rebuilt on a larger scale.Revolučný rok 1848 zrušil v celom kráľovstve poddanstvo.
