Bardejov appears in writing for the first time in 1241, when monks complained to King Béla IV that the boundaries of the Bardejov estate had been crossed. That is a fact about a piece of parchment, not about when people arrived — there was a settlement here before anyone bothered to write it down. It is also the year the Mongol army broke into the kingdom and destroyed the Hungarian host at the river Slaná, and Šariš lay near one of the routes they used. What the raid did to this particular valley is not recorded, so nobody should tell you the town was burned. What is recorded is that six years later, in 1247, Béla IV settled the boundary quarrel for good — and the charter that did it also names the mineral springs a few kilometres up the valley, the first appearance of what is now the spa.V písomnostiach sa Bardejov objavuje po prvý raz v roku 1241, keď sa mnísi sťažovali kráľovi Belovi IV., že ktosi porušil hranice bardejovského majetku. Čo nájazd urobil práve tejto doline, nikde nestojí — nikto by vám teda nemal tvrdiť, že mesto vtedy ľahlo popolom. Zapísané je niečo iné: o šesť rokov, v roku 1247, Belo IV. spor o hranice s konečnou platnosťou rozhodol, a listina pritom spomína aj minerálne pramene pár kilometrov vyššie v doline. Je to prvá zmienka o dnešných kúpeľoch.
