History of BardejovDejiny — Bardejov

Bardejov is a town that got rich and then stopped. Its merchants sat on the road to Poland, sold cloth and linen across half of Central Europe, and in the fifteenth century spent the money on a square, a church and a ring of walls. Then the trade routes moved, the wars came, and for three hundred years almost nothing was built here and almost nothing was pulled down — which is exactly why the medieval town is still there to walk through.

  1. 1241 · 12471241 · 1247 The first document, and the year the Mongols camePrvá listina a rok, keď prišli Mongoli

Bardejov appears in writing for the first time in 1241, when monks complained to King Béla IV that the boundaries of the Bardejov estate had been crossed. That is a fact about a piece of parchment, not about when people arrived — there was a settlement here before anyone bothered to write it down. It is also the year the Mongol army broke into the kingdom and destroyed the Hungarian host at the river Slaná, and Šariš lay near one of the routes they used. What the raid did to this particular valley is not recorded, so nobody should tell you the town was burned. What is recorded is that six years later, in 1247, Béla IV settled the boundary quarrel for good — and the charter that did it also names the mineral springs a few kilometres up the valley, the first appearance of what is now the spa.V písomnostiach sa Bardejov objavuje po prvý raz v roku 1241, keď sa mnísi sťažovali kráľovi Belovi IV., že ktosi porušil hranice bardejovského majetku.

  2. 1352 · 1365 · 13761352 · 1365 · 1376 Market rights, and a town that answers only to the kingTrhové práva a mesto, ktoré patrí priamo kráľovi

The town grew on the road to Poland, and German settlers came to work the crafts. Privileges followed the trade. In 1352 King Louis I allowed Bardejov an eight-day annual fair, on top of the weekly market it already held; in 1365 it won the right to try and hang criminals itself, which sounds grim but meant the town, not a lord, ran justice inside its own walls; and in 1376 the same king made it a free royal town. That last word is the important one. A free royal town answered directly to the crown, elected its own council, judged its own people and paid one agreed sum instead of whatever a local noble felt like demanding. You cannot build a stone square without that kind of security, and Bardejov built one. To posledné je kľúčové. Slobodné kráľovské mesto podliehalo priamo panovníkovi, volilo si vlastnú radu, súdilo si svojich ľudí a platilo jednu dohodnutú sumu namiesto toho, čo si práve zmyslel miestny šľachtic. Bez takejto istoty sa kamenné námestie nepostaví — a Bardejov si ho postavil.

In 1402 King Sigismund gave the town the staple right: merchants passing through had to unload and offer their goods for sale in Bardejov before travelling on. It is a licence to skim every caravan on the road, and it made the town wealthy. Between 1405 and 1407 a builder from Nuremberg turned the gate tower into a small fortified castle with its own garrison, and the walls went up around the whole town. In October 1410 a Polish army defeated a Hungarian force near Bardejov in the short war that followed the great battle at Grunwald; through the 1440s and 1450s the whole east was held by Ján Jiskra of Brandýs, a Bohemian captain hired to keep it for an infant king, and the royal towns learned to bargain with whoever had soldiers. Bardejov bound itself to Košice, Levoča, Prešov and Sabinov in a league called the Pentapolitana, the five towns. At its height it had more than fifty guilds covering sixty-four separate crafts, its speciality being linen bleached in the meadows by the river, and in 1464 the great church of St Giles was finished.V roku 1402 udelil kráľ Žigmund mestu právo skladu: kupci, ktorí tadiaľto prechádzali, museli tovar v Bardejove vyložiť a najprv ho ponúknuť na predaj tu.

  4. 1505–1509 · 1539 · 15491505 – 1509 · 1539 · 1549 The town hall, and a schoolmaster called StöckelRadnica a učiteľ menom Stöckel

The building in the middle of the square went up from 1505, begun by a master called Alexander and finished by masters Alexius and John of Prešov. Its lower half is Gothic and its upper half Renaissance, because taste changed while it was being built, and it is usually called the first Renaissance building in Slovakia. The Reformation reached Bardejov in the same generation and the town became Lutheran. Its schoolmaster, Leonard Stöckel, was born here, studied in Wittenberg under Melanchthon, came home in 1539 to run the town school, and made it the best in Upper Hungary; in 1549 he wrote the Confessio Pentapolitana, the statement of belief of the five allied towns. One curious result of everything that came later: most towns lost their medieval altars to fire, to Baroque refitting or to sale. Bardejov, poor and out of the way once its golden age ended, kept eleven of them, and they are still standing in St Giles.

  5. the 16th and 17th centuries16. a 17. storočie The century that took the town apartStoročie, ktoré mesto rozobralo

The golden age ended in the sixteenth century and did not come back for two hundred years. Three things did it at once. The Ottoman conquest of central Hungary moved the great trade roads away from this corner of the kingdom, so the staple right stopped being worth much. Fire and plague hit repeatedly, as they did every crowded walled town. And the long series of anti-Habsburg risings — Bocskai, Bethlen, Thököly, Rákóczi — crossed Šariš again and again, each one meaning soldiers billeted in people's houses, horses and grain requisitioned, and a cash contribution demanded by whoever held the town that season. The result is the reason you can visit the place: nobody had the money to knock the old houses down and rebuild them in the new style, so the fifteenth-century square simply stayed. A dlhý rad protihabsburských povstaní — Bocskaiho, Betlenovo, Tököliho, Rákócziho — prechádzal Šarišom znovu a znovu; zakaždým to znamenalo vojakov ubytovaných v domoch, zrekvirované kone a obilie a hotovosť vymáhanú tým, kto mesto práve držal. Výsledok je presne to, prečo sa sem dnes chodí: nikto nemal peniaze staré domy zbúrať a postaviť nové podľa vtedajšej módy, a tak námestie z 15. storočia jednoducho zostalo stáť.

  6. from the 1720s · the late 18th centuryod 20. rokov 18. storočia · koniec 18. storočia Recovery, and the spa in the valleyZotavenie a kúpele v doline

From roughly the 1720s the town filled up again, and with different people: Slovaks from the surrounding villages. In the same decades the springs up the valley were turned into a proper spa: Emperor Joseph II came, so did Marie Louise, later Napoleon's wife, and so did the Russian tsar Alexander I.Zhruba od 20. rokov 18. storočia sa mesto opäť zaľudnilo, a to inými ľuďmi: Slovákmi z okolitých dedín.

The revolutionary year of 1848 abolished serfdom across the kingdom. In the Šariš hills that meant the villagers finally owned the strips they worked — but the strips were small and the soil was thin, and a family holding could only be divided so many times. Remember that when the emigration starts a generation later. Up at the spa the mood was very different: by the middle of the century close to a thousand families a season were taking the waters, the composer Béla Kéler kept a house there from 1850 until his death in 1882, and when a fire destroyed much of the resort in 1856 it was simply rebuilt on a larger scale.

  8. 1893 · 1895 · 19031893 · 1895 · 1903 A railway, an empress, and the boats to AmericaŽeleznica, cisárovná a lode do Ameriky

After 1867 the kingdom of Hungary ran its own internal affairs inside the dual monarchy, and it pushed hard to make Hungarian the language of schools and offices — in a district where almost nobody spoke it at home. The railway from Prešov reached Bardejov in 1893, and the spa hit its peak: twelve hundred rooms and something like four thousand guests a season. Empress Elisabeth, the Sisi of the picture books, took the cure here in 1895, and a statue of her stood in front of the bath house from 1903. Meanwhile Šariš was among the poorest counties in the whole kingdom and one of the heaviest sources of emigrants in Europe: tens of thousands of people from these hills left for the mines and steel mills of Pennsylvania and Ohio. The same poverty that filled the American mills is why the villages around here never rebuilt their wooden churches in stone. Šariš bol pritom jednou z najchudobnejších stolíc kráľovstva a jedným z najsilnejších zdrojov vysťahovalcov v Európe: desaťtisíce ľudí z týchto kopcov odišli do baní a oceliarní v Pensylvánii a Ohiu.

  9. winter 1914–15zima 1914 – 1915 The Russians in the passesRusi v priesmykoch

The First World War came over the mountains rather than past them. In the autumn and winter of 1914–15 Russian units pushed through the Carpathian passes into the northern part of the Bardejov district, and the fighting in the Beskids was some of the coldest and worst of the entire eastern front. It left something you can still find: a scatter of small military cemeteries in the hills north of the town, where Austro-Hungarian and Russian soldiers are buried in the same ground, often with no names. The spa emptied, the men were at the front, and the district that had been exporting people to America was now exporting them to trenches.

Austria-Hungary fell apart in the autumn of 1918 and Šariš became part of Czechoslovakia. It was not settled quietly. In June 1919 the Hungarian Red Army pushed north into eastern Slovakia and took Prešov, where a Slovak Soviet Republic was proclaimed on 16 June; it lasted three weeks before Czechoslovak and allied troops drove it back. For Bardejov the more permanent change was the map itself: the Polish frontier was now an international border a few kilometres away, with customs posts on it, and the everyday trade with Galicia that the town had lived on for six hundred years was finished. V júni 1919 vtrhla maďarská Červená armáda na východné Slovensko a obsadila Prešov, kde 16. júna vyhlásili Slovenskú republiku rád; vydržala tri týždne, kým ju československé a spojenecké vojská nevytlačili.

In 1950 the historic core was declared a protected town reserve, among the first in the country — a decision that mattered more than it sounds, because it meant the new blocks of flats and the factories went up outside the old town instead of on top of it. Shoes and clothing became the town's industries and employed thousands. Through the 1970s and 1980s the square was restored house by house, and in 1986 Bardejov was awarded the European Gold Medal in Hamburg for that work — the first town in Czechoslovakia to receive it.V roku 1950 vyhlásili historické jadro za mestskú pamiatkovú rezerváciu, ako jedno z prvých v krajine — a znamenalo to viac, než sa zdá: nové panelové sídliská aj fabriky vyrástli mimo starého mesta, nie na ňom.

Today the town lives off the spa, tourism, public services and light manufacturing; the district remains one of the weakest in Slovakia economically and working abroad is completely normal. What a visitor gets is unusual value for a small town: eleven late-Gothic winged altars still standing in one church, a free-standing Renaissance town hall, and a wall circuit you can follow almost the whole way round.
