Makovica today is a long open ruin along a forested ridge — wards, gate passages and bastion stumps strung out for a surprising distance, because this was a great family's seat and not a border tower. What stands is increasingly what people have put back: the castle has one of the country's longer-running volunteer conservation efforts, with work camps through the summer, so parts of it may be fenced or scaffolded and the safe route can change from year to year. Below in the village lies the large military cemetery of the First World War, where soldiers of both armies are buried — a burial ground, not a viewpoint. Between the trenches on the ridge and the graves below, Zborov is one of the few places in Slovakia where a medieval castle and the twentieth century are a single story.Makovica je dnes dlhá otvorená zrúcanina na zalesnenom hrebeni — nádvoria, brány a pahýle bášt sa tiahnu prekvapujúco ďaleko, lebo toto bolo sídlo veľkého rodu, nie pohraničná veža. To, čo stojí, je čoraz väčšmi to, čo ľudia postavili späť: hrad má jednu z dlhšie trvajúcich dobrovoľníckych záchranných akcií v krajine, s pracovnými tábormi počas leta, takže časti môžu byť oplotené alebo v lešení a bezpečná trasa sa z roka na rok mení. Dole v obci leží veľký vojenský cintorín z prvej svetovej vojny, kde ležia vojaci oboch armád — je to pohrebisko, nie vyhliadka. Medzi zákopmi na hrebeni a hrobmi pod ním je Zborov jedným z mála miest na Slovensku, kde stredoveký hrad a dvadsiate storočie tvoria jeden jediný príbeh.
