Zborov Castle (Makovica)Zborovský hrad (Makovica)

This is the day the castle stopped being a castle, and it is worth naming who did it. During the uprising of Imrich Thököly against the Habsburgs, the castle was defended by his wife Helena Zrínska and held out hard — and on 14 October 1684 it was stormed and taken by the imperial army of General Schultz. Not by the Ottomans. Local tradition all over Slovakia blames the Turks for ruined castles; here the record is plain, and the truth is more uncomfortable, because the army that broke it was the army of the country's own ruler. An inventory of 1704 still describes Makovica as usable, but after the failure of Francis II Rákóczi's uprising the estate was confiscated and split between the Aspremont, Szirmay and Erdődy families, and nobody ever repaired it.Toto je deň, keď hrad prestal byť hradom, a stojí za to povedať, kto to urobil. Rákóciho bolo panstvo skonfiškované a rozdelené medzi Aspremontovcov, Sirmaiovcov a Erdődyovcov — a hrad už nikto neopravil.
