History of Kežmarok CastleDejiny — Kežmarský hrad

Almost every castle in Slovakia stands on a crag. This one stands on a street corner, inside its own town, and the town spent two centuries trying to get rid of it. The real story here is not a siege but a lawsuit — and the town won it, by buying the castle.

  1. 1447–14641447 – 1464 A fort in the corner of the market townPevnosť v rohu trhového mesta

A castle is named here in writing for the first time in 1447, in the years when Ján Jiskra of Brandýs and his soldiers held the Spiš. It was not built on empty ground: a monastery and the church of St Elizabeth — the same church Kežmarok is first mentioned beside, in 1251 — stood on this corner, and the fortification swallowed them. Historians do not agree on when the work began: some date the first castle to the turn of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, others to the decades after 1464, when the king handed the town to the Zápoľský family and Kežmarok lost the free royal status it had won in 1380. Either way the effect was the same, and from the burghers' point of view it was a disaster — a lord with walls, standing in their own marketplace.Hrad sa tu prvý raz spomína v písomnosti v roku 1447, v časoch, keď Spiš držal Ján Jiskra z Brandýsa so svojimi vojakmi.

  2. 16th century – 161016. storočie – 1610 Owners who came and wentMajitelia prichádzali a odchádzali

Through the sixteenth century the castle changed hands repeatedly — the Laski family, then the Ruebers — and each owner made it a little more a residence and a little less a fort: Renaissance ranges around a courtyard, arcaded galleries, regular windows, sgraffito on the plaster. On 25 May 1610 Štefan Thököly bought it for thirteen thousand Hungarian florins, and the Thökölys held it for the rest of the century. The lawsuit ground on all the while. A free royal town answered to the king; a castle lord answered to nobody nearby — and the two of them were living inside the same set of walls.Počas 16. storočia hrad striedal majiteľov — Laskovci, potom Rueberovci — a každý z nich z neho urobil o čosi viac sídlo a o čosi menej pevnosť: renesančné krídla okolo nádvoria, arkádové chodby, pravidelné okná, sgrafito na omietke. 25. mája 1610 ho za trinásťtisíc uhorských zlatých kúpil Štefan Tököli a Tököliovci ho držali po zvyšok storočia. Súdny spor medzitým pokračoval ďalej. Slobodné kráľovské mesto sa zodpovedalo kráľovi, hradný pán nikomu v okolí — a obaja žili v tých istých hradbách.

  3. 1657–17021657 – 1702 Imrich Thököly, and the end of the feudImrich Tököli a koniec sporu

Imrich Thököly was born in this castle on 25 September 1657. His father died in December 1670 while imperial troops besieged the family's castle at Orava; the boy got away east and came back as leader of the kuruc uprising against Habsburg rule. In 1682 the Ottoman sultan recognised him as ruler of Upper Hungary — and when the Ottoman army was broken before Vienna in 1683, his rule collapsed with it. He was excluded from the amnesty of the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699 and died in Ottoman exile in 1705; his family's estates were confiscated, and that is precisely how the town of Kežmarok was finally able to buy the castle in 1702, ending an argument two hundred years old. Z amnestie Karlovického mieru roku 1699 ho vylúčili a v roku 1705 zomrel v osmanskom vyhnanstve; rodine skonfiškovali majetky, a práve preto si mesto Kežmarok mohlo v roku 1702 hrad konečne kúpiť a ukončiť dvestoročnú hádku.

  4. 1702–17871702 – 1787 The town's own castle, and a fireMestský hrad a požiar

Owning the castle changed what it was. It stopped being a rival power inside the walls and became a large municipal building the town had to find a use for — a much duller and much better fate. Then in 1787 it burned. It stayed a damaged shell for over a century: a roofless castle in the middle of a market town is an expensive thing to own, and nobody was in a hurry.Vlastníctvo zmenilo zmysel hradu. Prestal byť súperiacou mocou vnútri hradieb a stal sa veľkou mestskou budovou, pre ktorú bolo treba nájsť využitie — oveľa nudnejší a oveľa lepší osud. Potom, v roku 1787, hrad vyhorel.

  5. 1900s – 1906začiatok 20. storočia – 1906 Restoration begins, and Thököly comes homeZačína obnova a Tököli sa vracia domov

Conservation work on the burnt-out castle began at the start of the twentieth century, the first serious attempt to save it since the fire. In 1906 the story that had started inside these walls closed a few streets away: the remains of Imrich Thököly, two hundred years dead in Ottoman exile, were brought back to Kežmarok and laid in a mausoleum in the new Evangelical church, minutes from the room where he was born. It was a political act as much as a funeral — a Hungary hunting for national heroes reclaiming a rebel prince. Whatever the motive, the castle and the mausoleum now show you both ends of one life within a five-minute walk.

  6. 1939–19451939 – 1945 What the museum has to explainČo musí múzeum vysvetliť

Nothing was besieged here in the Second World War, but the town around the castle went through the worst years in its history, and a town museum inside a town castle cannot skip them. Kežmarok's German-run administration armed some fifteen hundred Spiš Germans into Heimatschutz units at the end of August 1944, and the local attempt to join the Slovak National Uprising was crushed on 31 August; in September German forces murdered twenty-two people in the town. The German civilian population was evacuated between November 1944 and 21 January 1945, and on 27 January 1945 the Red Army took the town. Within three years Kežmarok lost — through evacuation and the post-war expulsions — the German majority it had had since the Middle Ages. Nemecká správa mesta ozbrojila koncom augusta 1944 asi tisícpäťsto spišských Nemcov do jednotiek Heimatschutzu a miestny pokus pripojiť sa k Slovenskému národnému povstaniu potlačili 31. augusta; v septembri nemecké jednotky v meste zavraždili dvadsaťdva ľudí.

  7. 1945–19891945 – 1989 From burnt shell to museumZ vyhorenej schránky múzeum

Under the communist state the castle belonged to the public sector and was treated as a monument: long, slow campaigns of restoration put the roofs back, consolidated the ranges and opened the interiors as the museum of the town. Archaeology inside the walls turned up what everyone knew was underneath — the church and the hospital the castle had been built over. The result is what a visitor walks through today: rooms of town history, guild chests and craft tools, an armoury, and the late-Renaissance castle chapel, which is the room most people remember afterwards. Výsledok je to, čím dnes návštevník prechádza: miestnosti mestských dejín, cechové truhlice a remeselnícke náradie, zbrojnica a neskororenesančná hradná kaplnka, ktorú si väčšina ľudí zapamätá najviac.

  8. since 1993od roku 1993 The easiest castle in Slovakia to visitNajprístupnejší hrad na Slovensku

The castle is standing, roofed and in use — not a ruin — and because it sits inside the town you reach it on the level, on foot, a few minutes from the main square. That makes it the sensible choice on a day when the Tatras are under cloud and the hilltop ruins are miserable. It is also only part of the walk: the wooden articular church, on the World Heritage List since 2008, the lyceum library and Thököly's mausoleum are all within minutes of the gate. The town that fought its castle for two centuries now runs it, which is the tidiest ending any Slovak castle has.
