A Castle Inside a TownHrad vnútri mesta

Kežmarok was already a wealthy free royal town — chartered in the fourteenth century, grown rich on cloth, crafts and the trade road to Poland — when the castle was pushed into its north-eastern corner in the second half of the fifteenth century. The site was not empty: an older church and a hospital stood there, and the new fortification swallowed them. That alone tells you how the townspeople felt about it.Kežmarok bol už bohatým slobodným kráľovským mestom — privilégiá získal v štrnástom storočí a zbohatol na súkne, remeslách a obchodnej ceste do Poľska — keď mu v druhej polovici pätnásteho storočia vtlačili do severovýchodného rohu hrad. Miesto nebolo prázdne: stál na ňom starší kostol a špitál a nové opevnenie ich pohltilo. Už to samo hovorí, ako sa na to mešťania pozerali.

What followed was one of the longest municipal feuds in the kingdom. A free royal town answered to the king; a castle lord answered to nobody nearby, and sat behind walls in the middle of the town’s own market. The two sides litigated, blockaded each other, and on occasion fought outright. Kežmarok was simultaneously carrying on a second, even older quarrel with Levoča over the right of storage — the privilege that forced passing merchants to unload and offer their goods. The Spiš of these centuries was not a sleepy place.

The castle changed hands repeatedly, and in 1579 it came to the Thököly family, who rebuilt it as a Renaissance residence — arcaded, plastered, more palace than fortress. It is the Thököly century that gives the courtyard its present shape. The feud ended only in 1702, when the town of Kežmarok bought the castle outright and, after two hundred years of trying, finally owned the thing standing in its own corner.Hrad opakovane menil majiteľov a v roku 1579 pripadol rodu Tökölyovcov, ktorí ho prestavali na renesančné sídlo — s arkádami, omietnuté, skôr palác než pevnosť. Práve tökölyovské storočie dalo nádvoriu jeho dnešnú podobu. Spor sa skončil až v roku 1702, keď mesto Kežmarok hrad odkúpilo a po dvoch storočiach snahy konečne vlastnilo to, čo mu stálo vo vlastnom rohu.
