Kežmarok CastleKežmarský hrad
A castle is named here in writing for the first time in 1447, in the years when Ján Jiskra of Brandýs and his soldiers held the Spiš. It was not built on empty ground: a monastery and the church of St Elizabeth — the same church Kežmarok is first mentioned beside, in 1251 — stood on this corner, and the fortification swallowed them. Historians do not agree on when the work began: some date the first castle to the turn of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, others to the decades after 1464, when the king handed the town to the Zápoľský family and Kežmarok lost the free royal status it had won in 1380. Either way the effect was the same, and from the burghers' point of view it was a disaster — a lord with walls, standing in their own marketplace.Hrad sa tu prvý raz spomína v písomnosti v roku 1447, v časoch, keď Spiš držal Ján Jiskra z Brandýsa so svojimi vojakmi.
