Through the sixteenth century the castle changed hands repeatedly — the Laski family, then the Ruebers — and each owner made it a little more a residence and a little less a fort: Renaissance ranges around a courtyard, arcaded galleries, regular windows, sgraffito on the plaster. On 25 May 1610 Štefan Thököly bought it for thirteen thousand Hungarian florins, and the Thökölys held it for the rest of the century. The lawsuit ground on all the while. A free royal town answered to the king; a castle lord answered to nobody nearby — and the two of them were living inside the same set of walls.Počas 16. storočia hrad striedal majiteľov — Laskovci, potom Rueberovci — a každý z nich z neho urobil o čosi viac sídlo a o čosi menej pevnosť: renesančné krídla okolo nádvoria, arkádové chodby, pravidelné okná, sgrafito na omietke. 25. mája 1610 ho za trinásťtisíc uhorských zlatých kúpil Štefan Tököli a Tököliovci ho držali po zvyšok storočia. Súdny spor medzitým pokračoval ďalej. Slobodné kráľovské mesto sa zodpovedalo kráľovi, hradný pán nikomu v okolí — a obaja žili v tých istých hradbách.
