There is no climb. You walk to Kežmarok Castle along ordinary streets, past ordinary houses, and then the road runs into a white wall with a gate in it. That transition — town, then suddenly fortress — is the single most unusual thing about visiting here, and it happens in the space of one pavement.Nijaký výstup tu nie je. Ku Kežmarskému hradu prídete po bežných uliciach, popri bežných domoch, a potom cesta narazí na bielu hradbu s bránou. Práve tento prechod — mesto a zrazu pevnosť — je na návšteve najneobvyklejší a odohrá sa na dĺžke jedného chodníka.
Inside, the plan is compact and legible: a walled quadrangle around a courtyard, with ranges on all sides, a tower, and the corner bastions that once carried guns. The Renaissance rebuilding is what you are looking at — sgraffito, arcaded galleries, regular windows — laid over a late-medieval skeleton that occasionally shows through in a thicker wall or a lower doorway.Vnútri je pôdorys kompaktný a čitateľný: opevnený štvorec okolo nádvoria, krídla na všetkých stranách, veža a nárožné bašty, ktoré kedysi niesli delá. To, čo vidíte, je renesančná prestavba — sgrafito, arkádové chodby, pravidelné okná — položená na neskorostredovekú kostru, ktorá občas presvitne v hrubšom múre alebo nižšom vstupe.
The interiors are a museum, and a full one: rooms of town history, craft guilds and burgher furniture, an armoury, archaeology from the site itself, and the castle chapel, which is the reason many visitors remember Kežmarok at all. The route is indoors almost throughout, which makes this a genuinely good wet-weather castle — a rare thing in a country of hilltop ruins.Interiéry sú múzeom, a to poriadnym: sály mestskej histórie, cechov a meštianskeho nábytku, zbrojnica, archeológia priamo z tohto miesta a hradná kaplnka, pre ktorú si mnohí Kežmarok vôbec zapamätajú.
