A fragment of oak taken from the wall of the church of St George has been dated to the second half of the ninth century — the time of Great Moravia, when Nitra was one of its two great centres. A study published in 2006 used that and other evidence to argue that the church itself was begun in the Great Moravian period. Not everyone accepts it: other readings put the first church in the tenth or the eleventh century, and the argument has now run for sixty years without ending. What a student can take from that is how dating actually works — a scrap of wood, coins in graves, the thickness of a wall — and how honest researchers can read the same evidence differently.Z muriva Kostola svätého Juraja vybrali kúsok dubového dreva a datovali ho do druhej polovice 9. storočia – do čias Veľkej Moravy, keď bola Nitra jedným z jej dvoch hlavných centier. Nie všetci s tým súhlasia: iné čítania kladú prvý kostol do 10. alebo 11. storočia a spor trvá už šesťdesiat rokov bez konca. Práve na tom sa dá pekne ukázať, ako datovanie funguje – kúsok dreva, mince v hroboch, hrúbka múru – a ako môžu poctiví bádatelia čítať tie isté nálezy rozdielne.
