After the Hungarian army was destroyed by the Ottomans at Mohács in 1526 the kingdom broke into three and the frontier crept north. The Tribeč villages were never Ottoman territory, but they were within reach of raiding parties, and the century and a half that followed is remembered here as a time of alarms, hiding places and requisitions rather than of battles. And yet in 1647, in the middle of all that, a school is mentioned in the village for the first time — a reminder that ordinary life did not stop while the frontier moved.
