Kostoľany pod Tribečom lie on the eastern flank of the Tribeč, roughly midway between Nitra and Zlaté Moravce, where the oak woods come down to the last of the arable. The church is older than anything else here and the settlement grew below it. Its core is a small rectangular stone nave, built when stone churches in this country were still rare, with narrow round-headed windows set high in the walls; a tower was added at the west end later, and the sanctuary was rebuilt again after that.Kostol je staršou stavbou než čokoľvek iné v obci a osada vyrástla pod ním. How old that core is has been argued over for decades. A ninth-century, Great Moravian origin has been proposed; other readings put the building in the tenth or the eleventh century. Excavation and analysis have narrowed the argument without ending it, and no honest account of the church gives a single date.O tom, aké staré to jadro je, sa vedie spor už desaťročia. In the 1960s plaster was taken off the nave walls and painting appeared underneath. Those murals are generally accepted as the oldest wall paintings surviving in Slovakia. Their dating hangs on the same unresolved question — the eleventh century is the usual attribution, and later readings are still argued for.V 60. rokoch 20. storočia sňali z múrov lode omietku a pod ňou sa objavila maľba. From outside it is a small, thick-walled, whitewashed building with a squat tower, standing alone above the houses. The interest is in the masonry: the blocked original windows high in the nave wall, the change in the build where the tower meets it. It is not a large or a showy church and it does not pretend to be.Zvonku je to malá bielená stavba s hrubými múrmi a zavalitou vežou, stojaca osamote nad domami. Zaujímavé je murivo: zamurované pôvodné okná vysoko v stene lode a zmena väzby v mieste, kde k nej prilieha veža. Nie je to veľký ani honosný kostol — a netvári sa, že ním chce byť.
Inside, when inside is possible, the paintings are fragments rather than a scheme: figures and framing bands on the nave walls, worn, patched by centuries of replastering, and lit as sparingly as conservation demands. Marked paths climb from the village and its neighbours onto the ridge, and the walk up to Veľký Tribeč is the standard longer outing from here — beech and oak most of the way, with the summit itself wooded.Z obce a od susedných dedín vystupujú na hrebeň značené chodníky a výstup na Veľký Tribeč je odtiaľto štandardnou dlhšou túrou — väčšinu cesty bučinami a dubinami, samotný vrchol je zalesnený.
Living village, not a museumŽivá obec, nie skanzen
The church is a national cultural monument and the church of a very small parish, not a staffed museum. It is normally locked. Getting in is arranged in advance, through the municipality or the parish, with someone who holds the key, and in practice that happens mostly in the warmer half of the year. Turning up unannounced and finding the door open is luck, not a plan.Kostol je národnou kultúrnou pamiatkou a kostolom veľmi malej farnosti, nie múzeom s personálom. Bežne býva zamknutý. Vstup sa dohaduje vopred — cez obec alebo faru, s niekým, kto má kľúč — a v praxi sa to darí najmä v teplejšej polovici roka. Prísť neohlásene a nájsť otvorené je šťastie, nie plán.
The rest of the village is a few streets, farmland and forest. Nothing is built for visitors: no ticket office, no café, no signage beyond the monument plaque. The graveyard around the church is in use, and photography inside may be restricted for conservation reasons — ask rather than assume.Zvyšok obce sú pár ulíc, polia a les. Pre návštevníkov tu nie je postavené nič: žiadna pokladnica, žiadna kaviareň, žiadne značenie okrem pamiatkovej tabule. Cintorín okolo kostola sa naďalej používa a fotografovanie v interiéri môže byť z dôvodov ochrany obmedzené — radšej sa spýtajte, ako to predpokladať.

There is no railway. Buses from Nitra and Zlaté Moravce serve the villages along the eastern foot of the Tribeč; by car it is a signposted turn off the road between the two towns, and the nearest station is at Zlaté Moravce.Železnica sem nevedie.
