Jelenec today is a commuter village for Nitra with a lake at one end that fills with swimmers in July. The castle is a freely accessible forest ruin — no ticket, no staff, no railings — and in recent years volunteer heritage workers have been consolidating the masonry and capping the wall heads so that weather and tree roots stop pulling it apart. The path up takes about an hour through oak and hornbeam, and from the ridge you get exactly what the builders were paying for: the whole plain below, with Zobor at the far end of it.Jelenec je dnes zázemím Nitry a na jednom konci dediny má jazero, ktoré sa v júli plní kúpajúcimi. Hrad je voľne prístupná lesná zrúcanina – bez vstupného, bez personálu, bez zábradlí – a v posledných rokoch na ňom pracujú dobrovoľníci, ktorí murivo konzervujú a prekrývajú koruny múrov, aby ho počasie a korene neroztrhali. Chodník hore trvá asi hodinu dubovým a hrabovým lesom a z hrebeňa sa otvorí presne to, za čo stavitelia platili: celá rovina pod Tribečom a na jej konci Zobor.
