At the end of the fourteenth century the castle passed to the Forgách family — Forgáčovci in Slovak — and they held it for something close to six hundred years, one of the longest single-family tenures of any castle in Slovakia. Under them the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries were one long building site: new palace ranges inside the walls and a far larger circuit of fortification outside them. Family and hill grew into one another so completely that the castle is still known by their Hungarian name for it, Ghymes — and so was the village, until 1948.Na sklonku 14. storočia prešiel hrad na rod Forgáčovcov a tí ho držali takmer šesťsto rokov – patrí to k najdlhším držbám jedného rodu na jednom hrade na Slovensku. Za nich bolo 15. a 16. storočie jednou veľkou stavbou: nové paláce vnútri hradieb a oveľa rozsiahlejšie opevnenie navonok. Rod a kopec zrástli tak, že hrad dodnes nesie ich maďarské meno Ghymes – a rovnako sa až do roku 1948 volala aj dedina.
