Jelenec sits about fifteen kilometres north-east of Nitra where the road from the city runs into the Tribeč hills. Oak and hornbeam woods rise directly behind the houses; in front, the last of the Nitra plain.Jelenec leží asi pätnásť kilometrov severovýchodne od Nitry tam, kde cesta z mesta vchádza do Tribeča. The village grew as the estate settlement below Gýmeš, the castle on the ridge, which was built in the thirteenth century to hold this side of the hills and belonged for centuries to the Forgách family. Their later manor house stands in the village itself — the usual pattern in Slovakia, where a family moved down off the rock as soon as it was safe to.Obec vyrástla ako poddanská osada pod Gýmešom, hradom na hrebeni, ktorý postavili v 13. storočí, aby držal túto stranu pohoria, a ktorý po stáročia patril Forgáčovcom. The climb to Gýmeš is the reason most people come: a marked path from the village through the woods to the ridge, an hour or so up, with the ruin at the top and a view over the Nitra plain to the Zobor. At the other end of the village the lake is a summer swimming and fishing spot with a campsite, and the manor house and the village church fill in a short walk on the flat.Na druhom konci obce je jazero letným kúpaliskom a rybárskym miestom s kempom a kaštieľ s obecným kostolom vyplnia krátku prechádzku po rovine.
Jelenec is a commuter village for Nitra as much as anything else, and the lake brings weekend crowds in July and August. Out of season it is quiet and the ridge path is empty. Nothing here is ticketed or staffed, which also means nothing is maintained for visitors — the castle ruin in particular deserves ordinary care.Jelenec je predovšetkým obcou, odkiaľ sa dochádza do Nitry, a jazero v júli a auguste priťahuje víkendové davy. Mimo sezóny je tu ticho a hrebeňový chodník prázdny. Nič tu nie je spoplatnené ani obsluhované, čo zároveň znamená, že nič nie je upravené pre návštevníkov — najmä zrúcanina si žiada bežnú opatrnosť.
