History of JelenecDejiny — Jelenec

Jelenec lies where the road out of Nitra runs into the Tribeč hills, and its history is the history of the castle on the ridge above it. Gýmeš was built because of the Mongols, held by one family for close to six centuries, and abandoned in the end not by an army but for a better address down in the valley. The village was its estate settlement, and it carried the castle's name — Gýmeš — until 1948.Jelenec leží tam, kde cesta z Nitry vchádza do Tribeča, a jeho dejiny sú dejinami hradu na hrebeni nad ním.

  1. 1113rok 1113 First mentioned in 1113Prvá písomná zmienka, 1113

The village first appears in writing in 1113 — the year of the great charter of the abbey on Zobor above Nitra, the document that first names dozens of places in this part of the country. In 1113 there was no stone castle on the ridge yet: this was ordinary settled land on the edge of the royal forest, held for the king and administered from Nitra. What made the difference here was the ground itself — oak forest, a spur with a view over the whole plain, and one narrow way up along it.Obec sa prvý raz spomína v roku 1113 – v roku veľkej listiny zoborského opátstva nad Nitrou, dokumentu, ktorý po prvý raz menuje desiatky miest v tomto kraji.

  2. 1241, and c. 1253–1270rok 1241 a okolo 1253 – 1270 A castle built because of 1241Hrad, ktorý vznikol pre rok 1241

On 11 April 1241 the Mongol army destroyed the royal army of Hungary at Muhi on the river Slaná. One of the men who came through that battle was Ondrej, son of Ivanka, of the Hunt-Poznan kindred — and it was he who had the stone castle built on the ridge above this village, most probably between 1253 and 1270. That is the pattern for nearly every castle in Slovakia: they are not what the Mongols destroyed, they are what the kingdom built afterwards — in stone, on high ground, because earth-and-timber forts had just been shown to be worthless. Gýmeš is one of the clearest examples in the country, because we know who built it and we know what he had seen.11. apríla 1241 rozdrvilo mongolské vojsko uhorskú kráľovskú armádu pri Slanej.

  3. late 13th centurykoniec 13. storočia How the castle grewAko hrad rástol

The first castle was small and businesslike: an early Gothic wall around a triangular courtyard, with a square tower on the south side that was both a residence and the last line of defence. Before the end of the thirteenth century a second tower had been added. Everything the village was — its fields, its labour, its dues — belonged to that enclosure on the ridge, and the settlement below existed to feed it. That relationship is what the words estate village mean, and here it lasted into the nineteenth century. Presne to znamená spojenie poddanská dedina a trvalo to tu až do 19. storočia.

  4. from the end of the 14th centuryod konca 14. storočia The Forgách arrivePrichádzajú Forgáčovci

At the end of the fourteenth century the castle passed to the Forgách family — Forgáčovci in Slovak — and they held it for something close to six hundred years, one of the longest single-family tenures of any castle in Slovakia. Under them the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries were one long building site: new palace ranges inside the walls and a far larger circuit of fortification outside them. Family and hill grew into one another so completely that the castle is still known by their Hungarian name for it, Ghymes — and so was the village, until 1948.Na sklonku 14. storočia prešiel hrad na rod Forgáčovcov a tí ho držali takmer šesťsto rokov – patrí to k najdlhším držbám jedného rodu na jednom hrade na Slovensku.

  5. 16th century, and 166316. storočie a rok 1663 Guns change the wallsDelá menia hradby

Gunpowder made high thin walls useless, so the sixteenth century gave Gýmeš a big trapezoidal tower and a round tower at the entrance, built to carry artillery and to withstand it. The danger was real: in the autumn of 1663 the Ottomans captured the star fortress at Nové Zámky, south of Nitra, and made it the seat of a province — the northernmost the empire ever held in Central Europe. Gýmeš was refitted again after that, with artillery bastions on the southern side, where the ridge is easiest to climb. A castle is not a building that was finished once; it is a building that kept being rewritten by whatever weapon was newest.

  6. 18th century18. storočie Still building in the eighteenth centuryV 18. storočí sa tu ešte stavalo

Most Slovak castles were empty shells by 1700. Gýmeš is one of the very few where building work carried on into the eighteenth century: a Gothic palace inside the walls was converted into the Forgách family crypt with a chapel. A family that buries its dead in a place has not finished with it — even when it has already moved down into the warmer, flatter manor houses in the valley.Väčšina slovenských hradov bola okolo roku 1700 už prázdna.

  7. 1848, and the mid-19th centuryrok 1848 a polovica 19. storočia The family leaves the ridgeRod odchádza z hrebeňa

By the middle of the nineteenth century the estate had given up the castle for good, and once there is no roof, decay goes quickly. Nothing dramatic happened here — no siege, no explosion, nothing of the kind is documented — the castle was simply out-lived by comfort. The revolution of 1848 abolished serfdom across the Kingdom of Hungary, and with it the arrangement the castle had existed to run: the villagers were nobody's subjects any more, and a fortress on a ridge had no purpose left at all.V polovici 19. storočia panstvo hrad definitívne opustilo a keď nie je strecha, skaza ide rýchlo.

  8. 1918–19381918 – 1938 A new state, the end of the estateNový štát, koniec veľkostatku

In 1918 the village became part of Czechoslovakia, still under the name Gýmeš. The Forgách manor house down in the village remained the largest building in it, but the world that had built it, a landed estate with tenants, ended with the empire.V roku 1918 sa obec stala súčasťou Československa a stále sa volala Gýmeš.

  9. 1938–19451938 – 1945 The war yearsVojnové roky

The First Vienna Award of November 1938 gave the lowland south of Nitra to Hungary, and the new border ran a short drive from here; Jelenec stayed on the Slovak side, inside the wartime Slovak State — an authoritarian one-party regime and an ally of Nazi Germany. The Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944 and German troops occupied the country; the front reached the Nitra country at the end of March 1945 as the armies pushed west towards Bratislava.

In 1948 the village was officially renamed from Gýmeš to Jelenec. The old name was Hungarian and the new one Slovak, and both are usually explained by the same animal — gím and jeleň, the red deer of these woods. In the decades that followed the fields went into a collective farm, the village became a place people commuted from rather than farmed in, and the castle above it went on quietly falling down.V roku 1948 dedinu úradne premenovali z Gýmeša na Jelenec. Staré meno bolo maďarské, nové slovenské a obe sa zvyknú vysvetľovať tým istým zvieraťom – gím a jeleň, jeleň z týchto lesov.

  11. todaydnes A ruin looked after by volunteersZrúcanina, o ktorú sa starajú dobrovoľníci

Jelenec today is a commuter village for Nitra with a lake at one end that fills with swimmers in July. The castle is a freely accessible forest ruin — no ticket, no staff, no railings — and in recent years volunteer heritage workers have been consolidating the masonry and capping the wall heads so that weather and tree roots stop pulling it apart. The path up takes about an hour through oak and hornbeam, and from the ridge you get exactly what the builders were paying for: the whole plain below, with Zobor at the far end of it.Jelenec je dnes zázemím Nitry a na jednom konci dediny má jazero, ktoré sa v júli plní kúpajúcimi. Hrad je voľne prístupná lesná zrúcanina – bez vstupného, bez personálu, bez zábradlí – a v posledných rokoch na ňom pracujú dobrovoľníci, ktorí murivo konzervujú a prekrývajú koruny múrov, aby ho počasie a korene neroztrhali. Chodník hore trvá asi hodinu dubovým a hrabovým lesom a z hrebeňa sa otvorí presne to, za čo stavitelia platili: celá rovina pod Tribečom a na jej konci Zobor.
