In 1948 the village was officially renamed from Gýmeš to Jelenec. The old name was Hungarian and the new one Slovak, and both are usually explained by the same animal — gím and jeleň, the red deer of these woods. In the decades that followed the fields went into a collective farm, the village became a place people commuted from rather than farmed in, and the castle above it went on quietly falling down.V roku 1948 dedinu úradne premenovali z Gýmeša na Jelenec. Staré meno bolo maďarské, nové slovenské a obe sa zvyknú vysvetľovať tým istým zvieraťom – gím a jeleň, jeleň z týchto lesov. Polia potom prevzalo družstvo, z dediny sa stalo miesto, odkiaľ sa dochádza za prácou do Nitry, a hrad nad ňou sa ticho rozpadával ďalej.
