In 1543 Suleiman's army took Esztergom across the river, and the lower Hron became frontier country for a century and a half. In 1663 the Ottomans captured the great star fortress at Nové Zámky and made it the seat of a province — the northernmost the empire ever held in Central Europe — before imperial troops retook it in 1685. Of the three churches the priory is said to have had, two are reported to have been lost in this period.
