A charter of 1135 names the place as Byn — the first time it appears in writing. That is a fact about a document, not about when people arrived; the coins and the ramparts prove they were here much earlier. By then the rotunda may already have been standing: the little round chapel is usually dated to the twelfth century, though its purpose is disputed — baptistery and burial chapel are both argued for. Twelve niches are cut into its wall, painted later with the apostles, and there is nothing else like it in Slovakia.Listina z roku 1135 uvádza obec ako Byn – vtedy sa jej meno prvý raz objavuje v písomnom prameni. Je to údaj o dokumente, nie o tom, odkedy tu ľudia žijú; mince aj valy dokazujú, že oveľa dlhšie. Rotunda vtedy možno už stála: najčastejšie sa kladie do 12. storočia, hoci o jej pôvodnom účele sa vedie spor – uvažuje sa o krstiteľnici aj o pohrebnej kaplnke. Do jej obvodovej steny je vytesaných dvanásť výklenkov, do ktorých neskôr namaľovali apoštolov, a na Slovensku to nemá obdobu.
