The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov
BíňaBíňa
Around 1217 a lord of the Hunt-Poznan kindred named Omodej founded a house of Premonstratensian canons here, and their church of the Assumption is the building you still walk into: three aisles, two west towers, a carved portal beneath them. A generation later, in 1241, the Mongol army destroyed the royal army of Hungary at Muhi on the river Slaná and wintered in the kingdom; early in 1242 it crossed the frozen Danube and burned Esztergom, fifteen kilometres from here — only the citadel held out. The priory church survived. What the invasion changed was policy: after it, King Béla IV pushed the kingdom to build in stone and on high ground, which is why most Slovak castles are younger than 1241, not older. Prepoštský kostol to prežil.
