When the Avar khaganate collapsed around the year 800, the Slav communities north of the Danube grew into the Principality of Nitra, which became part of Great Moravia in 833. The confluence sat on its southern edge, watching the water. Slovak historians think the Byzantine mission of Constantine — later called Cyril — and Methodius came upriver past here in 863, though that is an assumption rather than a recorded fact.
