Where the Váh meets the Danube: the largest fortress complex in Central Europe, a shipyard, a square built out of copies of European façades, and the birthplace of Franz Lehár.Tam, kde sa Váh vlieva do Dunaja: najväčší pevnostný komplex v strednej Európe, lodenica, námestie postavené z kópií európskych fasád a rodisko Franza Lehára.
Komárno stands at the confluence of the Váh and the Danube, on the Slovak bank, with the Hungarian town of Komárom directly opposite. The two were one town until 1920 and still function as a pair, joined by the Elizabeth Bridge and, since 2020, by a second road bridge downstream.
It is the town with the largest Hungarian-speaking population in Slovakia, and the one where the Danube most obviously governs everything — the flood defences, the harbour, the shipyard and the fortress all exist because of the river.Je to mesto s najväčším podielom maďarsky hovoriaceho obyvateľstva na Slovensku a zároveň mesto, kde Dunaj najviditeľnejšie určuje všetko — protipovodňové hrádze, prístav, lodenica aj pevnosť existujú kvôli rieke.
The Romans held a fort at Kelemantia on this bank, facing their legionary base at Brigetio across the river, and the medieval castle guarded the confluence, but the fortress that matters was built after the Ottoman wars began. The Old Fortress was rebuilt in Italian bastion style from the 1540s, the New Fortress added after Nové Zámky fell in 1663 and finished in 1673, and the whole system was hugely enlarged in the nineteenth as a central redoubt of the Habsburg empire.
It was never taken by force. What did damage Komárno were earthquakes — the town was wrecked twice in the eighteenth, in 1763 and again in 1783 — and the fire and siege of the 1848–49 revolution, when the garrison under György Klapka held out after the rest of Hungary had surrendered.Silou ju nikdy nedobyli. Komárnu uškodili zemetrasenia — mesto dvakrát ťažko poškodili v 18. storočí, v rokoch 1763 a 1783 — a požiar a obliehanie počas revolúcie 1848 – 49, keď posádka pod vedením Györgya Klapku vydržala aj potom, čo zvyšok Uhorska kapituloval.
The fortress is the reason to come: the bastions, casemates and gates of the Old and New Fortress can be visited on guided tours, and the scale only registers when you walk it. Parts of the complex remained in military hands until recently, so restoration is ongoing and access varies — check before you travel.Pevnosť je hlavným dôvodom návštevy: bastióny, kazematy a brány Starej i Novej pevnosti sa dajú prejsť so sprievodcom a jej rozmery si človek uvedomí až pri chôdzi. Časti areálu boli donedávna v rukách armády, obnova preto stále prebieha a prístup sa mení — pred cestou si ho overte.
The Courtyard of Europe, built in the 1990s beside the main square, is a single enclosed square whose buildings imitate the architecture of different European nations — kitsch to some, a genuinely popular civic gesture to others. The Danube Museum covers the river and the town, and the Church of St Andrew and the Serbian Orthodox church record the town's mixed population.Nádvorie Európy, postavené v 90. rokoch pri hlavnom námestí, je uzavreté námestie, ktorého budovy napodobňujú architektúru rôznych európskych národov — pre niekoho gýč, pre iného obľúbené mestské gesto. Podunajské múzeum sa venuje rieke a mestu a Kostol svätého Ondreja spolu so srbským pravoslávnym kostolom pripomínajú zmiešané obyvateľstvo mesta.
Two composers-in-embryo were born here: Mór Jókai, the Hungarian novelist, in 1825, and Franz Lehár, composer of The Merry Widow, in 1870. Both are commemorated in the streets they were born on.Narodili sa tu dvaja slávni rodáci: v roku 1825 maďarský spisovateľ Mór Jókai a v roku 1870 Franz Lehár, skladateľ Veselej vdovy. Obom sú venované pamätníky na uliciach, kde prišli na svet.
Shipbuilding has been the town's industry for well over a century — the Komárno yards built river vessels for the whole Danube basin — and the port is still a working freight harbour. Around it are food processing, engineering and cross-border trade with Hungary.Lodiarstvo je priemyslom mesta už vyše storočia — komárňanské lodenice stavali riečne plavidlá pre celé Podunajsko — a prístav dodnes funguje ako nákladný. Okolo neho stojí potravinárstvo, strojárstvo a cezhraničný obchod s Maďarskom.
The Selye János University, teaching in Hungarian, is based here, which keeps a student population in a town that would otherwise be ageing.Sídli tu Univerzita J. Selyeho s vyučovacím jazykom maďarským, ktorá udržiava študentov v meste, ktoré by inak starlo.
Komárno is the end of the branch line from Bratislava along the Danube and of the line down from Nové Zámky, with a border crossing to Komárom for onward Hungarian trains. Danube cruise boats call here in season.Komárno je konečnou stanicou trate z Bratislavy popri Dunaji aj trate z Nových Zámkov, s hraničným prechodom do Komáromu na maďarské vlaky. V sezóne tu zastavujú aj dunajské výletné lode.
