For three hundred years the Danube here was the edge of the Roman Empire. The legionary base of Brigetio lay on the far bank, near today's Hungarian Komárom, and seven kilometres east of Komárno, at Iža, the Romans built a bridgehead fort on this side of the water; archaeologists call it Kelemantia. It began as earth and timber under the emperor Marcus Aurelius, was burned by Germanic raiders within a few years, was rebuilt in stone, and was finally given up around the year 400. After Rome came the Avars: eight of their cemeteries, from the years between 568 and 791, have been dug up inside the town itself.
