The founding charter of the Benedictine abbey at Hronský Beňadik, written in 1075, names a place called Camarum — a castle with a settlement beneath it. That is the first written mention, which is a fact about a document rather than about when people arrived; excavation dates the stone castle itself to the twelfth century. Around it grew Komárom County, one of the oldest counties of the Kingdom of Hungary, with its seat here. The castle was royal property and stayed royal — which is why kings, rather than local lords, kept spending money on it for the next five hundred years.Zakladacia listina benediktínskeho opátstva v Hronskom Beňadiku z roku 1075 spomína miesto zvané Camarum — hrad s osadou pod ním. Je to prvá písomná zmienka, teda údaj o listine, nie o tom, odkedy tu ľudia žili; samotný kamenný hrad kladú vykopávky až do 12. storočia. Okolo neho vznikla Komárňanská stolica, jedna z najstarších v Uhorskom kráľovstve, a hrad bol jej sídlom. Hrad patril kráľovi a kráľovským aj zostal — preto doň ďalších päťsto rokov investovali panovníci, a nie miestni páni.
