The Mongol army wrecked the Kingdom of Hungary in 1241, and in the second half of the thirteenth century the kings recruited German settlers to fill the emptied valleys of what is now eastern Slovakia. That is when the Bodva valley was colonised. Where exactly these particular settlers came from is not known — one suggestion is that they were of Flemish origin — and honest local histories say so rather than inventing an answer. The oldest document connected with the place, in the records of the monastery at Jasov, dates from 1272 and concerns a dispute over forest rights; Medzev celebrated seven hundred and fifty years from it in 2022.Mongolské vojsko rozvrátilo Uhorské kráľovstvo roku 1241 a v druhej polovici 13. storočia králi získavali nemeckých osadníkov, aby zaplnili vyprázdnené doliny dnešného východného Slovenska. Najstaršia listina spojená s týmto miestom, v písomnostiach kláštora v Jasove, je z roku 1272 a týka sa sporu o lesné práva; Medzev si od nej roku 2022 pripomenul sedemstopäťdesiat rokov.
