The Slovak National Uprising broke out at Banská Bystrica in August 1944 and Germany occupied the country to put it down; through the winter that followed the forests of the Volovské vrchy above Gelnica were partisan country. The front itself arrived in January 1945, when Soviet and Romanian armies pushed west through the Spiš and the Hnilec valley. Then came the last change. The German population of Gelnica was expelled in 1945, under the decrees applied to Germans across Czechoslovakia, and some had already been evacuated by the German authorities as the front came near.
