History of GelnicaDejiny — Gelnica

Gelnica exists because of what is inside the hills around it. German miners were invited into the narrow valley of the Hnilec in the thirteenth century, and for six hundred years the town lived on silver, copper and iron — and on the mining law that decided how they could be dug. When the ore was finished, almost everything else the town had been went with it: its language, its trade and half its people.

The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov

  1. 1241 and the decades after it1241 a nasledujúce desaťročia The Mongols, and the miners who came afterwardsMongoli a baníci, ktorí prišli po nich

In the spring of 1241 a Mongol army broke into the Kingdom of Hungary and wrecked it in a single campaign. King Béla IV's answer had two halves: stone castles, and settlers to replace the people who had been killed or had fled. He and the kings after him offered German miners charters, personal freedom and their own courts if they would come and open the ore. That is how German-speaking families reached the Hnilec valley — not as conquerors but as invited specialists — and it is the reason a town grew in a place with almost no flat ground. Nothing at all is recorded about Gelnica in 1241; what the year explains is why Gelnica exists a generation later.

  2. 1246 · 1264 · 1276 · 12881246 · 1264 · 1276 · 1288 Three dates for one beginningTri dátumy pre jeden začiatok

Slovak and English accounts give 1246 as Gelnica's first appearance in writing. German ones say the oldest surviving document that actually names the place — as Gelnic — is a royal confirmation of 1276, which repeats the mining-town rights granted in 1264. All three are facts about parchment that happened to survive, not about when people arrived, and the disagreement is worth noticing, because that is what most "founded in" dates really are. What the documents do settle is the trade: silver and copper above all, with gold, lead, iron and even mercury taken from the same mountains. By 1288 the town had a Dominican friary, and a castle stood on the hill above it.Slovenské a anglické spracovania uvádzajú ako prvú písomnú zmienku o Gelnici rok 1246. Čo listiny naozaj dosvedčujú, je remeslo: predovšetkým striebro a meď, popri nich zlato, olovo, železo, ba i ortuť z tých istých hôr. Roku 1288 stál v meste dominikánsky kláštor a nad ním na kopci hrad.

  3. 1435 · the decades to the 1520s1435 · desaťročia do 20. rokov 16. storočia A free royal mining town — and then notSlobodné kráľovské banské mesto — a potom už nie

In 1435 Gelnica was raised to a free royal mining town: it answered to the king and to nobody in between, elected its own council, ran its own court and kept its own mining law. That law was among the oldest written down in the Kingdom of Hungary, and other mining towns took their rules from it — having your law copied is the medieval version of setting a standard. Gelnica headed the association of the upper Hungarian mining towns, a group of seven that included Rožňava, Smolník and Jasov. Then it slipped. From the end of the fifteenth century the mines gave less, and by the 1520s the town had lost most of the privileges it had spent two hundred years collecting.Roku 1435 povýšili Gelnicu na slobodné kráľovské banské mesto: podliehala priamo kráľovi a nikomu medzi tým, volila si vlastnú radu, mala vlastný súd aj vlastné banské právo. To právo patrilo k najstarším zapísaným v Uhorskom kráľovstve a ďalšie banské mestá si podľa neho upravovali svoje poriadky — a keď si niekto opisuje vaše právo, znamená to v stredoveku to isté, čo dnes určovať normu. Gelnica stála na čele spolku hornouhorských banských miest, sedmičky, do ktorej patrili aj Rožňava, Smolník a Jasov. Potom prišiel zostup. Od konca 15. storočia dávali bane menej a do 20. rokov 16. storočia stratilo mesto väčšinu výsad, ktoré dvesto rokov zbieralo.

  4. the sixteenth century · 154316. storočie · 1543 Copper for Europe, and a friary lost in 1543Meď pre Európu a kláštor stratený roku 1543

In the sixteenth century the copper of these mountains was traded on a European scale: the Thurzo family of Upper Hungary went into partnership with the Fugger bankers of Augsburg, reorganised the mines and shipped the metal west. Gelnica belonged to that world, and also to the disorder of its century — the Dominican friary in the town was destroyed in 1543, in fighting the records describe only as unrest. Notice what is not said. This was not an Ottoman raid, and a great deal of the damage popularly blamed in Slovakia on "the Turks" was actually done by Hungarian, imperial or rebel troops, or by fire. In the later 1500s about a thousand people lived here, roughly three German speakers to every Slovak.V 16. storočí sa meď z týchto hôr obchodovala v európskom meradle: hornouhorskí Turzovci sa spojili s augsburskými bankármi Fuggerovcami, bane preorganizovali a kov vyvážali na západ.

  5. 16851685 The castle burnsHrad zhorí

The castle above Gelnica was destroyed for good by fire in 1685. The year is not a random one: the 1680s were the collapse of Imrich Thököly's kuruc rising against the Habsburgs, when imperial armies were retaking eastern Hungary town by town. Whether the two things are connected the records do not say — they say only that it was fire. That is worth keeping, because local tradition in Slovakia would almost certainly blame a ruin like this on the Turks, and here the sources do not. What is left above the town is fragments of wall and a view down the valley. Nad mestom zostali úlomky muriva a výhľad do doliny.

  6. 1743–1746 · 18021743 – 1746 · 1802 Not a great mining centre, still a mining townUž nie veľké banské stredisko, stále banské mesto

Gelnica was no longer a name in European metal, but it never stopped being a mining town, and the eighteenth century left its mark in stone rather than in silver. The Gothic parish church was rebuilt in Baroque taste between 1743 and 1746, and in 1802 a plain two-storey late-Baroque town hall went up for a council whose main business was still the mines. Mining under the Habsburgs was a state affair — surveyed, taxed and regulated from Vienna and from the chamber towns — so a small town like this now worked inside somebody else's system instead of running its own. Both buildings are still standing, and the town hall has the last word in this story.Gelnica už nebola menom v európskom obchode s kovom, no banským mestom byť neprestala — a 18. storočie po sebe zanechalo skôr kameň než striebro. Gotický farský kostol prestavali barokovo v rokoch 1743 – 1746 a roku 1802 postavili striedmu dvojpodlažnú neskorobarokovú radnicu pre radu, ktorej hlavnou agendou boli stále bane. Obe stavby stoja dodnes a radnica má v tomto príbehu ešte posledné slovo.

  7. 1837–1845 · 18481837 – 1845 · 1848 A stone bridge, and the end of serfdomKamenný most a koniec poddanstva

Between 1837 and 1845 the town threw a two-arched stone bridge across the Hnilec — the sort of thing a valley town builds when the carts are getting heavier and the road matters more than it used to. Then came 1848, the revolution that abolished serfdom across the Kingdom of Hungary. Gelnica's own burghers had been free for four hundred years; that is exactly what a free royal town meant. The change fell instead on the villages up and down the valley, whose people had owed labour and dues to a landlord and now owed none — and within a generation those freed villagers were the labour force of the valley's mines and forests, with many of them leaving for America before the century was out.V rokoch 1837 – 1845 postavilo mesto cez Hnilec kamenný most s dvoma oblúkmi — presne to, čo dolinové mesto urobí, keď sú vozy ťažšie a cesta dôležitejšia než kedysi. Potom prišiel rok 1848 a revolúcia, ktorá v celom Uhorsku zrušila poddanstvo. Gelnickí mešťania boli slobodní už štyristo rokov; presne to znamenalo slobodné kráľovské mesto. Zmena dopadla na dediny hore i dole dolinou, ktorých ľudia dovtedy odrábali panské a platili dávky a odrazu už nič — a o generáciu neskôr boli práve títo oslobodení dedinčania pracovnou silou baní a lesov celej doliny, pričom mnohí z nich ešte pred koncom storočia odišli do Ameriky.

  8. 1892 · 19101892 · 1910 Electric light, and a census that has to be read carefullyElektrina a sčítanie, ktoré treba čítať opatrne

In 1892 an electricity works began operating at Gelnica; German accounts call it the first power station on the territory of today's Slovakia, although neighbouring Krompachy claims a small hydroelectric plant three years earlier — claims of this kind depend entirely on how you define "first". The census of 1910 counted 3,833 people in the town: 2,095 Germans, 1,098 Slovaks and 606 Hungarians. That last figure needs care. The census asked for mother tongue rather than ancestry, and in a state that ran its schools, its courts and its offices in Hungarian there was a steady pull towards answering "Hungarian", so numbers from these decades measure pressure as much as they measure people. Sčítanie roku 1910 napočítalo v meste 3 833 ľudí: 2 095 Nemcov, 1 098 Slovákov a 606 Maďarov. To posledné číslo treba brať opatrne.

  9. 1918–19381918 – 1938 A German town in a Czechoslovak stateNemecké mesto v československom štáte

When Czechoslovakia was declared in October 1918 the frontier moved without anybody in Gelnica going anywhere. A town that had spent centuries as a German-speaking place inside the Kingdom of Hungary was now a German-speaking minority in a Czechoslovak republic. The mines were the harder problem: Slovak ore had been protected inside a large empire, and in a small state trading on open markets it competed with cheaper metal from overseas, so the Hnilec valley worked shorter and shorter shifts. The German miners of these lower valleys were known as Gründler, with a dialect and a trade of their own, and they were still here — for one more generation.

The Slovak National Uprising broke out at Banská Bystrica in August 1944 and Germany occupied the country to put it down; through the winter that followed the forests of the Volovské vrchy above Gelnica were partisan country. The front itself arrived in January 1945, when Soviet and Romanian armies pushed west through the Spiš and the Hnilec valley. Then came the last change. The German population of Gelnica was expelled in 1945, under the decrees applied to Germans across Czechoslovakia, and some had already been evacuated by the German authorities as the front came near. Seven hundred years of a German-speaking mining town ended inside a few months.Slovenské národné povstanie vypuklo v auguste 1944 v Banskej Bystrici a Nemecko obsadilo krajinu, aby ho potlačilo; v nasledujúcej zime boli lesy Volovských vrchov nad Gelnicou partizánskym krajom.

  11. 1948–1989 · 19631948 – 1989 · 1963 State mines, and a museum in the town hallŠtátne bane a múzeum v radnici

Under communism the mines were state property, and mining in the Hnilec valley went on — smaller each decade, kept going for the jobs rather than for the profit. What grew instead was commuting: the enormous new steelworks built beside Košice from the end of the 1950s drew workers off the whole eastern half of the country, and a train from Gelnica was an hour of a working day. In 1963 the mining museum moved into the old town hall of 1802, which is where you find it today. It is an unusual thing for a town of this size to have, and it is there for a simple reason: the record it keeps is the entire history of the place.

  12. since 1993 · 2021od roku 1993 · 2021 After the orePo rude

The last of the mining stopped within living memory, and what the hills hold now is spoil heaps, sealed adits and forest. Gelnica is the seat of a small mountain district that has been among those with the highest long-term unemployment in Slovakia, the valley's villages have lost people steadily, and the census of 2021 counted 5,951 in the town. The work that remains is forestry and wood processing, small manufacturing, public services — and commuting to Košice, forty kilometres down the road. It leaves a fair question for a student to sit with: what happens to a place whose one reason for existing has been used up, and whose job is it to answer that.
