In the spring of 1241 a Mongol army broke into the Kingdom of Hungary and wrecked it in a single campaign. King Béla IV's answer had two halves: stone castles, and settlers to replace the people who had been killed or had fled. He and the kings after him offered German miners charters, personal freedom and their own courts if they would come and open the ore. That is how German-speaking families reached the Hnilec valley — not as conquerors but as invited specialists — and it is the reason a town grew in a place with almost no flat ground.
