1685 The castle burnsHrad zhorí

The castle above Gelnica was destroyed for good by fire in 1685. The year is not a random one: the 1680s were the collapse of Imrich Thököly's kuruc rising against the Habsburgs, when imperial armies were retaking eastern Hungary town by town. Whether the two things are connected the records do not say — they say only that it was fire. That is worth keeping, because local tradition in Slovakia would almost certainly blame a ruin like this on the Turks, and here the sources do not. Či tie dve veci súvisia, pramene nehovoria — hovoria len, že to bol oheň. A to sa oplatí zapamätať: ľudová tradícia by takúto zrúcaninu takmer isto pripísala Turkom, hoci pramene o nich mlčia. Nad mestom zostali úlomky muriva a výhľad do doliny.
