In 1892 an electricity works began operating at Gelnica; German accounts call it the first power station on the territory of today's Slovakia, although neighbouring Krompachy claims a small hydroelectric plant three years earlier — claims of this kind depend entirely on how you define "first". The census of 1910 counted 3,833 people in the town: 2,095 Germans, 1,098 Slovaks and 606 Hungarians. That last figure needs care. The census asked for mother tongue rather than ancestry, and in a state that ran its schools, its courts and its offices in Hungarian there was a steady pull towards answering "Hungarian", so numbers from these decades measure pressure as much as they measure people.Roku 1892 začala v Gelnici pracovať elektráreň; nemecké spracovania ju označujú za prvú na území dnešného Slovenska, hoci susedné Krompachy si nárokujú malú vodnú elektráreň o tri roky skôr — a takéto prvenstvá celkom závisia od toho, ako si slovo prvý zadefinujete. Sčítanie roku 1910 napočítalo v meste 3 833 ľudí: 2 095 Nemcov, 1 098 Slovákov a 606 Maďarov. To posledné číslo treba brať opatrne. Sčítanie sa pýtalo na materinskú reč, nie na pôvod, a v štáte, ktorý viedol školy, súdy aj úrady po maďarsky, ťahalo všetko k odpovedi „maďarská" — čísla z týchto desaťročí teda merajú tlak práve tak ako ľudí.
