The name is first written down in 1269, in a charter of King Béla IV, in the form Ztumpa. It comes from the word stupa, a water-driven stamping mill whose hammers crushed flax and hemp seed so that oil could be pressed out of it. The place, in other words, was named after the machine that stood in it — a working village on the streams coming down off the hills. From the fourteenth century the estate belonged to the counts of Svätý Jur and Pezinok, one of the great families of this end of the kingdom, and it stayed theirs until their line died out in the first half of the sixteenth century.Meno sa prvý raz zapísalo v roku 1269 v listine kráľa Bela IV. v tvare Ztumpa. Pochádza zo slova stupa — vodou poháňaného zariadenia, ktorého kladivá drvili ľanové a konopné semeno, aby sa z neho dal vylisovať olej. Obec teda dostala meno podľa stroja, ktorý v nej stál: podľa práce na potokoch stekajúcich z hôr. Od 14. storočia patrilo panstvo grófom zo Svätého Jura a Pezinka, jednému z najmocnejších rodov v tomto kúte kráľovstva, a zostalo im, kým ich rod v prvej polovici 16. storočia nevymrel.
