The diet that met in Pressburg in 1847 turned out to be the last one ever held here. On 11 April 1848, in the Primate's Palace, King Ferdinand V signed the laws it had passed: serfdom was abolished, the labour and dues that peasants owed their landlords were ended, and Hungary was given its own responsible government. For most people living in this country, that April is the single most important date of the nineteenth century — it is when their great-great-grandparents stopped working somebody else's fields for nothing. The revolution and the war that followed were fought out elsewhere, and when it was over the Hungarian parliament moved to Pest and never came back.
