From 1563 the rulers of Hungary were crowned in St Martin's Cathedral, down in the town below the castle; the first was Maximilian, the last was a queen consort crowned in 1830. Eleven rulers and eight royal consorts were crowned here — nineteen people in all, over two hundred and sixty-seven years. The crown jewels were kept up in the castle's Crown Tower, and the coronation itself was a day-long procession through the streets: the new king rode out to a mound built of earth brought from every county of the kingdom and cut the air with a sword towards each of the four points of the compass, swearing to defend the country from every direction. A gilded copy of the crown still sits on top of the cathedral spire. That is why this ordinary-looking Gothic church matters so much: for nearly three centuries, whoever ruled Hungary began by kneeling in it.Od roku 1563 sa uhorskí panovníci korunovali v Dóme svätého Martina, dole v meste pod hradom; prvým bol Maximilián, poslednou kráľovná manželka korunovaná roku 1830. Korunováciu tu absolvovalo jedenásť panovníkov a osem kráľovských manželiek — spolu devätnásť ľudí počas dvestošesťdesiatich siedmich rokov. Korunovačné klenoty sa uchovávali hore na hrade v Korunnej veži a samotná korunovácia bola celodenným sprievodom po meste: nový kráľ vyšiel na vŕšok navŕšený z hliny privezenej zo všetkých stolíc kráľovstva a máchol mečom na štyri svetové strany na znak toho, že bude krajinu brániť zo všetkých smerov. Pozlátená kópia koruny je na veži dómu dodnes. Práve preto je tento na pohľad obyčajný gotický kostol taký dôležitý: kto vládol Uhorsku, začínal takmer tri storočia tým, že si v ňom kľakol.
