In the spring of 1241 the Mongol army destroyed the Hungarian royal army at Muhi and rode across the kingdom; a year later it turned back east and left. Around here what burned was what had no wall: the open villages and the settlement below the castle. The stone fortress on the rock is counted among the places that held. But the important part of 1241 is not the damage — it is the lesson King Béla IV drew from it. He ordered stone castles built all over the kingdom and gave towns the right to wall themselves, inviting settlers, many of them German-speaking, to fill them. Nearly every stone castle in Slovakia dates from the decades after the Mongols, not before them. Tu zhorelo to, čo nemalo hradby: otvorené dediny a osada pod hradom.
