In 1405 Sigismund of Luxembourg declared Pressburg a free royal town — meaning it answered to the king alone and to no local lord, the best legal position a town could have. Sigismund was also fighting the Hussite wars across the border in Bohemia and Moravia, and he rebuilt the castle above the town as a huge Gothic fortress; its south-western Crown Tower still stands from that work, and Hussite raiding columns reached this corner of the kingdom repeatedly in the 1430s. Then in 1465 King Matthias Corvinus obtained the pope's permission and founded the Academia Istropolitana here — the first university on the territory of today's Slovakia. It taught law, medicine and the arts to students from several countries, and it did not survive its founder: after Matthias died in 1490 the money stopped and the university closed.
