In independent Slovakia the town gained a standing of its own: since 24 July 1996 Žarnovica has been a district seat, with the offices that go with the title. Wood is still the industry and engineering sits beside it, while up the side valley towards Banská Štiavnica the Rozália mine at Hodruša-Hámre still produces gold — one of the last working gold mines in Europe, and a rare corner of the continent where the medieval trade never entirely stopped. Revište is being consolidated by volunteers and heritage workers and the ruin is in better shape than it was a generation ago. The Kľak valley is quiet, and the memorials at its head are why most visitors drive up it.V samostatnom Slovensku získalo mesto vlastné postavenie: od 24. júla 1996 je Žarnovica okresným mestom so všetkými úradmi, ktoré k tomu patria. Priemyslom zostáva drevo a popri ňom strojárstvo, kým hore bočnou dolinou smerom na Banskú Štiavnicu ťaží baňa Rozália v Hodruši-Hámroch stále zlato — patrí k posledným činným zlatým baniam v Európe a je vzácnym kútom kontinentu, kde stredoveké remeslo nikdy celkom neprestalo. Revište konzervujú dobrovoľníci a pamiatkari a zrúcanina je v lepšom stave než pred generáciou. Kľakovská dolina je tichá a pamätníky v jej závere sú dôvodom, prečo do nej väčšina návštevníkov ide.
