The Mongol invasion of 1241 showed the Kingdom of Hungary that it had almost no stone fortresses, and King Béla IV spent the rest of his reign building them. Revište, on a rock above the Hron a few kilometres upstream of Žarnovica, belongs to that generation: a royal castle probably raised in the second half of the thirteenth century and first named in a document of 1265. Its job was not a border but a road. Everything the mining towns produced — ore, refined silver and gold, and salt going the other way — travelled down the Hron past this rock, and a castle here could tax it, escort it, or stop it.Mongolský vpád v roku 1241 ukázal Uhorskému kráľovstvu, že kamenných pevností nemá takmer žiadne, a Belo IV. strávil zvyšok vlády ich stavaním. Jeho úlohou nebola hranica, ale cesta. Všetko, čo banské mestá vyrobili — ruda, vyčistené striebro a zlato aj soľ idúca opačným smerom —, schádzalo dolu Hronom popri tejto skale a hrad odtiaľ mohol vyberať mýto, náklad sprevádzať alebo ho zastaviť.
