History of ŽarnovicaDejiny — Žarnovica

Žarnovica is not a mining town — it is the place the mining country had to pass through. The Hron road runs by it, the twenty-kilometre Kľak valley comes down into it, and for centuries ore, charcoal and above all timber came out of the hills and went on from here. The castle of Revište, on its rock upstream, was built to take a cut of that traffic. And the valley behind the town holds one of the worst single days of the Second World War in Slovakia.Žarnovica nie je banské mesto — je to miesto, cez ktoré musela banská krajina prejsť. Vedie popri nej hronská cesta, ústi do nej dvadsať kilometrov dlhá Kľakovská dolina a stáročia odtiaľto putovala ďalej ruda, drevené uhlie a predovšetkým drevo z okolitých kopcov.

The Mongol invasion of 1241 showed the Kingdom of Hungary that it had almost no stone fortresses, and King Béla IV spent the rest of his reign building them. Revište, on a rock above the Hron a few kilometres upstream of Žarnovica, belongs to that generation: a royal castle probably raised in the second half of the thirteenth century and first named in a document of 1265. Its job was not a border but a road. Everything the mining towns produced — ore, refined silver and gold, and salt going the other way — travelled down the Hron past this rock, and a castle here could tax it, escort it, or stop it.Mongolský vpád v roku 1241 ukázal Uhorskému kráľovstvu, že kamenných pevností nemá takmer žiadne, a Belo IV. strávil zvyšok vlády ich stavaním.

  2. 13321332 The town in the crook of two valleysMesto v ohybe dvoch dolín

Žarnovica itself first appears in writing in 1332. It sits where the Kľak valley comes down to the Hron, and that is the whole reason it exists: a market and staging place on the river road, at the mouth of a side valley twenty kilometres long and full of forest. Unlike Kremnica or Nová Baňa it was never a free royal town. It belonged to whoever held the castle, and its people were a lord's subjects rather than the king's burghers — a difference that decided how they lived until 1848. The Gothic parish Church of Saints Peter and Paul dates from around 1400.Samotná Žarnovica sa v písomnostiach objavuje prvý raz v roku 1332. Patrila tomu, kto držal hrad, a jej ľudia boli poddanými zemepána, nie kráľovskými mešťanmi — rozdiel, ktorý im určoval život až do roku 1848. Gotický farský Kostol svätých Petra a Pavla pochádza z čias okolo roku 1400.

  3. 1467–14791467 – 1479 Jiskra's men, then a bishop's familyJiskrovi ľudia, potom biskupov rod

In the 1440s Revište was held by the Bohemian companies of Ján Jiskra, the commander hired to hold this part of the kingdom for an infant king, whose garrisons sat on castles all along the Hron. King Matthias Corvinus finally took the castle in 1467 and gave it in 1468 to Archbishop János Vitéz, who died in 1472. In 1479 the king granted it to Bishop Orbán Dóczy, and the Dóczy family then held Revište and Žarnovica for nearly two hundred years. From that point the town had one landlord family, and its fortunes were theirs.V štyridsiatych rokoch 15. storočia držali Revište české oddiely Jána Jiskru, veliteľa najatého, aby udržal túto časť kráľovstva pre malého kráľa; jeho posádky sedeli na hradoch po celom Pohroní. Matej Korvín hrad napokon v roku 1467 dobyl a v roku 1468 ho dal arcibiskupovi Jánovi Vitézovi, ktorý zomrel v roku 1472. V roku 1479 ho kráľ udelil biskupovi Urbanovi Dócimu a rod Dócich potom držal Revište aj Žarnovicu takmer dvesto rokov. Odvtedy malo mesto jednu panskú rodinu a jeho osudy boli jej osudmi.

  4. 1530–15501530 – 1550 Fortifying against the raidsOpevňovanie proti nájazdom

After the Ottoman victory at Mohács in 1526 the frontier moved north year by year, and everything in this valley was rebuilt with that in mind. The manor house on the rocky knoll in the middle of Žarnovica, which had gone up around 1490, was fortified between 1530 and 1550 — thick walls, small windows, a house made defensible. The mining towns upstream paid for a screen of strengthened castles across the southern approaches, and Revište was one of them. Nobody in this valley expected a formal siege; what they expected was a raiding column that arrived fast and left with people and cattle.

  5. 4 August 16474. augusta 1647 The last Dóczy loses his headPosledný Dóci prišiel o hlavu

On 4 August 1647 Ottoman troops took Žarnovica, and Zsigmond Dóczy, the last lord of his line, was captured and beheaded. The family died out with him and Revište reverted to the crown. It is worth being exact here, because 'the Turks destroyed it' is a sentence attached to far more Slovak places than it belongs to — in this case the record actually names the day, the town and the man. The Ottomans did not stay: raids of this kind were after plunder, captives and ransom, not occupation.4. augusta 1647 obsadili Žarnovicu osmanské vojská a Žigmunda Dóciho, posledného pána svojho rodu, zajali a sťali. Rod ním vymrel a Revište pripadlo späť korune.

  6. 1676–16791676 – 1679 The mining chamber takes the castleHrad preberá banská komora

In 1676 Revište passed to the mining chamber at Banská Štiavnica — the royal office that ran the mines — and it kept the castle to the end. Three years later, during the uprising led by Imrich Thököly against the Habsburgs, his troops badly damaged it; the walls were repaired afterwards. This is the honest version of a story that usually gets told about Turks: most Slovak castles wrecked in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries were wrecked in these Hungarian civil wars, by one Christian army or the other, or were pulled down afterwards on imperial orders so that no rebel could use them again.V roku 1676 prešlo Revište pod banskú komoru v Banskej Štiavnici — kráľovský úrad, ktorý spravoval bane — a tá ho držala až do konca.

  7. 18th century18. storočie Soldiers, then a fire, then a ruinVojaci, potom požiar, potom zrúcanina

Revište kept a small garrison into the late eighteenth century, and then its usefulness simply ran out: artillery had made a castle of this kind pointless, the wars were over, and nobody wanted to live in it. A fire finished it and it was never rebuilt — by the nineteenth century it was the ruin you can walk into today. The town below went on with its own trade, which was wood: timber floated and hauled down from the Vtáčnik and the Štiavnica Hills, and charcoal burned in the forests for the smelters of the mining towns. Mesto pod ním žilo ďalej svojím remeslom, a tým bolo drevo: plavené a zvážané z Vtáčnika a Štiavnických vrchov, a drevené uhlie pálené v lesoch pre huty banských miest.

  8. 18481848 The manor burns, serfdom endsKaštieľ horí, poddanstvo sa končí

The year 1848 did two things to this town at once. The revolution abolished serfdom across the Habsburg lands, which mattered more here than in a royal mining town: the people of Žarnovica had been a landlord's subjects, owing him labour and dues, and now they were not. And the manor house in the middle of the town burned down that same year. It was rebuilt with an extra storey and a late-Classicist front, which is why a building begun around 1490 looks nineteenth-century from the street.Rok 1848 urobil tomuto mestu dve veci naraz. Revolúcia zrušila v habsburských krajinách poddanstvo, čo tu znamenalo viac než v kráľovskom banskom meste: Žarnovičania boli poddanými zemepána, dlžní mu robotu a dávky — a zrazu neboli. A kaštieľ uprostred mesta v tom istom roku vyhorel. Obnovili ho, nadstavali o poschodie a dostal neskoroklasicistickú fasádu; preto budova začatá okolo roku 1490 vyzerá z ulice ako devätnáste storočie.

  9. the later 19th centurykoniec 19. storočia Rails, sawmills and the timber tradeŽeleznica, píly a obchod s drevom

Under Austria-Hungary the valley's business became timber on an industrial scale. Rafting logs down the Hron gave way to sawmills driven by steam, and the railway built up the valley in these decades meant that boards could go anywhere in the monarchy. Wood has been this town's industry from then until now — sawmilling, board and plywood, and the furniture trades that follow them. It is a quieter story than gold, and it has lasted a great deal longer.

  10. 19181918 Czechoslovakia, and the villages up the valleyČeskoslovensko a dediny hore v doline

Austria-Hungary fell apart in 1918 and this became a district of Czechoslovakia. The change was administrative rather than dramatic — the same sawmills, the same forests, new officials. What did not change was how poor the side valley was: at the head of the Kľak valley, Ostrý Grúň and Kľak were smallholders' villages of a few hundred people living off wood, sheep and thin fields. Remember those two names. In 1945 they are the reason this district has a memorial that people still travel to every January.V roku 1918 sa Rakúsko-Uhorsko rozpadlo a z tohto kraja sa stal okres Československa.

  11. 1939–19441939 – 1944 The Slovak State, and the Uprising in the mountainsSlovenský štát a povstanie v horách

Czechoslovakia was destroyed in March 1939 and the Slovak State, a client of Nazi Germany, took its place. On 29 August 1944 the Slovak National Uprising began, with Banská Bystrica as its capital and this whole stretch of the Hron inside insurgent territory. Banská Bystrica fell on 27 October and the fight moved into the mountains: partisan units, among them the Vtáčnik and Bohdan Khmelnitsky detachments, worked out of the forests at the head of the Kľak valley through the winter. The villages up there fed them and hid them, and in January 1945 they paid for it.V marci 1939 zaniklo Československo a nahradil ho Slovenský štát, vazal nacistického Nemecka. Bystrica padla 27. októbra a boj sa presunul do hôr: partizánske oddiely, medzi nimi Vtáčnik a oddiel Bohdana Chmeľnického, operovali cez zimu z lesov v závere Kľakovskej doliny.

On 21 January 1945 a German unit called Edelweiss — formally Abwehrgruppe 218 — together with an auxiliary detachment of the local German Heimatschutz went up the Kľak valley and destroyed both villages at its head, as a warning to everyone else. In Ostrý Grúň they killed 64 men, women and children and burned 128 houses. In Kľak they killed 84 people, 36 of them children, and burned all 132 houses and farm buildings. This was not a battle. It was a reprisal against civilians for the partisans in the woods above them, and it is one of the worst single days of the war in Slovakia. Memorials stand in both villages, the first of them raised in 1952, and the anniversary is still kept.21. januára 1945 vyšla Kľakovskou dolinou nemecká jednotka Edelweiss — úradne Abwehrgruppe 218 — spolu s pomocným oddielom domáceho Heimatschutzu a obe obce v jej závere zničila, ostatným na výstrahu. V Ostrom Grúni zabili 64 mužov, žien a detí a vypálili 128 domov. V Kľaku zabili 84 ľudí, z toho 36 detí, a vypálili všetkých 132 domov a hospodárskych stavieb. Nebola to bitka.

  13. 1948–19891948 – 1989 Rebuilt villages, and a timber townObnovené dediny a drevárske mesto

The burned villages were rebuilt after the war and the monuments came with them: a memorial at Kľak in 1952, one at Ostrý Grúň in 1954, and larger works in the 1960s, including a sculpture of a mother shielding her child. Under communism Žarnovica's woodworking plants were enlarged into a state timber and plywood industry, and the aluminium works at Žiar nad Hronom, a quarter of an hour upstream, took much of the district's labour. Blocks of flats went up behind the old streets. It is the same shape as a hundred other Slovak towns: a small market place turned into a works town with commuters.Vypálené obce po vojne obnovili a s nimi prišli pamätníky: v Kľaku v roku 1952, v Ostrom Grúni v roku 1954 a v šesťdesiatych rokoch väčšie diela vrátane súsošia matky brániacej dieťa.

  14. 24 July 199624. júla 1996 A district town of its ownVlastné okresné mesto

In independent Slovakia the town gained a standing of its own: since 24 July 1996 Žarnovica has been a district seat, with the offices that go with the title. Wood is still the industry and engineering sits beside it, while up the side valley towards Banská Štiavnica the Rozália mine at Hodruša-Hámre still produces gold — one of the last working gold mines in Europe, and a rare corner of the continent where the medieval trade never entirely stopped. Revište is being consolidated by volunteers and heritage workers and the ruin is in better shape than it was a generation ago. The Kľak valley is quiet, and the memorials at its head are why most visitors drive up it.V samostatnom Slovensku získalo mesto vlastné postavenie: od 24. júla 1996 je Žarnovica okresným mestom so všetkými úradmi, ktoré k tomu patria.
