In independent Slovakia the works at Jelšava, together with the plant a few kilometres up the valley at Lubeník, still put this small Gemer town among Europe's larger producers of refractory magnesia. That is very nearly the whole industry of the district, which makes it fragile: when the steel and cement markets soften, the entire valley feels it at once. Around the town, though, lies some of the best country in Slovakia — the Muránska planina National Park, the Gothic village churches of Gemer with their medieval wall paintings, and the caves and gorges of the Slovak Karst beyond them.V samostatnom Slovensku zaraďuje závod v Jelšave spolu s prevádzkou pár kilometrov vyššie v Lubeníku toto malé gemerské mesto medzi väčších európskych výrobcov žiaruvzdorných magnezitových materiálov. Okolie mesta pritom patrí k najkrajším kútom Slovenska — Národný park Muránska planina, gotické dedinské kostolíky Gemera so stredovekými nástennými maľbami a za nimi jaskyne a tiesňavy Slovenského krasu.
