After 1948 the magnesite mine and works were nationalised and enlarged, blocks of flats went up, and the plant became the reason the town existed at all. Jelšava also acquired something it had not asked for: from 1968, after the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia, a Soviet garrison was stationed here, and it stayed until 1990. Forty years of planning left the town with one large employer, one skill and very little else — which is exactly the position it was in when the planning stopped.Po roku 1948 magnezitovú baňu aj závod znárodnili a rozšírili, vyrástli panelové domy a závod sa stal dôvodom, prečo mesto vôbec existuje. Jelšava pritom dostala aj to, o čo nestála: od roku 1968, po vpáde vojsk Varšavskej zmluvy do Československa, tu bola sovietska posádka a zostala až do roku 1990. Štyridsať rokov plánovania zanechalo mesto s jedným veľkým zamestnávateľom, jednou zručnosťou a takmer ničím iným — a presne v tejto pozícii ho plánovanie opustilo.
