History of JelšavaDejiny — Jelšava

Jelšava is the oldest-documented town of the Muráň valley: named in a royal charter of 1243, given the right of the sword in 1552, administered for well over a century from an Ottoman district, annexed by Hungary from 1938 to 1945, and rebuilt in the twentieth century around a single mineral — magnesite. Its history explains both the size of its square and the state of the town standing on it.Jelšava je najstaršie doložené mesto Muránskej doliny: spomína ju kráľovská listina z roku 1243, roku 1552 dostala právo meča, vyše storočia ju spravovali z osmanského okresu, v rokoch 1938 – 1945 patrila Maďarsku a v dvadsiatom storočí ju prestavala jediná surovina — magnezit.

  1. 1241 · the bull of 12431241 · bula z roku 1243 Named in a reward for the Mongol warMeno v odmene za mongolskú vojnu

Jelšava's first appearance in writing is a direct consequence of the Mongol invasion. In 1241 a Mongol army destroyed most of the Kingdom of Hungary's wooden forts in a single season, and King Béla IV spent the years afterwards rewarding the men who had fought and pressing them to build in stone. His bull of 1243 granted part of the Muráň valley and the Štítnik estate to Filip and Detrich, ancestors of the Bebek family — and it names Jelšava. The town's documented history therefore begins not with its founding but with the paperwork of a disaster.Prvá písomná zmienka o Jelšave je priamym dôsledkom vpádu Mongolov. Roku 1241 zničilo mongolské vojsko za jedinú sezónu väčšinu drevených hradísk Uhorska a kráľ Belo IV. potom roky odmeňoval tých, ktorí bojovali, a tlačil ich stavať z kameňa. Jeho bula z roku 1243 darovala časť Muránskej doliny a štítnický majetok Filipovi a Detrichovi, predkom Bebekovcov — a Jelšavu v nej menuje.

  2. the fourteenth centuryštrnáste storočie German colonists, iron and bellsNemeckí osadníci, železo a zvony

German settlers came to Jelšava in the fourteenth century, as they did across the mining districts, and the town grew into a market and craft centre for the whole valley. Iron was the business: ore from the hills, charcoal from the forests, hammer mills on the Muráň. Its guilds included bell-casters, whose work carried the town's name further than any of its lords did. The long open square in the middle of Jelšava is the shape that trade left behind, and it was laid out for a place with more standing than the town has now.

  3. the middle of the fifteenth centurypolovica pätnásteho storočia Held from MuráňOvládaná z Muráňa

Through the middle of the fifteenth century Gemer was controlled by Jan Jiskra, the Czech captain hired to hold the kingdom together for its infant king, and his men made Muráň castle one of their main strongholds. A market town in the shadow of such a garrison had no say in who taxed it. It is worth knowing that this period, and not any Turkish raid, is when the towns of the valley first learned to negotiate with armed men who were not the king's.V polovici pätnásteho storočia ovládal Gemer Ján Jiskra, český kapitán najatý na to, aby udržal kráľovstvo pohromade pre malého kráľa, a jeho ľudia spravili z Muránskeho hradu jednu zo svojich hlavných opôr. Trhové mesto v tieni takej posádky nemalo do reči, kto ho zdaní.

  4. 15521552 The right of the swordPrávo meča

In 1552 King Ferdinand I granted Jelšava the right of the sword — the right to try serious crimes in its own court and to carry out death sentences. It sounds grim, and it was, but for a town of the period it was a mark of real standing: a place with the sword right ran its own justice instead of sending its people before a lord's court. The grant came at the worst possible moment. Two years later the Ottomans took the fortress of Fiľakovo, and the frontier arrived at Jelšava's door.Roku 1552 udelil kráľ Ferdinand I. Jelšave právo meča — teda právo súdiť ťažké zločiny vlastným súdom a vykonávať tresty smrti.

  5. 1554–1593 and 1596–16861554 – 1593 a 1596 – 1686 A town inside the sanjakMesto vnútri sandžaku

Jelšava was not merely raided by the Ottomans. For well over a century it was administered as part of the Ottoman sanjak — the district — of Fiľakovo, appearing in Ottoman tax registers as Yoşva. In 1556 the town was stormed and burned; its own tradition records hundreds of its people killed and hundreds more carried off, and afterwards it paid tribute. Like most of southern Slovakia it then paid twice, to the sultan and to the Hungarian king, because neither would concede the other's claim. The ironworking went on regardless: five smelting furnaces and four hammer mills were at work in 1573, and Protestantism took hold in the same decades.Jelšavu Osmani nielen prepadávali. Vyše storočia ju spravovali ako súčasť osmanského sandžaku — okresu — Fiľakovo a v tureckých daňových súpisoch vystupuje ako Yoşva. Roku 1556 mesto vyplienili a vypálili; domáca tradícia hovorí o stovkách zabitých a ďalších stovkách odvlečených a odvtedy Jelšava odvádzala poplatky. Ako väčšina južného Slovenska napokon platila dvakrát — sultánovi aj uhorskému kráľovi — lebo ani jeden neuznal nárok druhého. Železiarstvo napriek tomu bežalo ďalej: roku 1573 tu pracovalo päť hút a štyri hámre a v tých istých desaťročiach sa tu udomácnilo evanjelictvo.

The Muráň estate above Jelšava came to Ferenc Wesselényi in 1644 through a night attack on the castle and a marriage to its heiress, Mária Séčiová. Wesselényi went on to lead the great noble conspiracy against the Habsburgs; he died before it was uncovered, his widow held the castle until imperial troops took it after five days in 1670, and the crown confiscated the whole estate. Two further uprisings followed, Thököly's and then Rákóczi's, which ran until 1711, and the valley paid for all of them in requisitions and quartered soldiers. Ottoman authority over Jelšava ended in 1686, when the Habsburgs finally pushed the frontier back off Gemer.Muránske panstvo nad Jelšavou získal roku 1644 František Vešeléni nočným prepadom hradu a sobášom s jeho dedičkou Máriou Séčiovou. Vešeléni potom viedol veľké šľachtické sprisahanie proti Habsburgovcom; zomrel skôr, než sa prezradilo, jeho vdova držala hrad, kým ho roku 1670 po piatich dňoch nedobyli cisárske vojská, a koruna celé panstvo zhabala. Nasledovali ďalšie dve povstania, Tököliho a potom Rákociho, ktoré trvalo do roku 1711, a dolina ich všetky zaplatila rekvizíciami a ubytovaním vojska. Osmanská moc nad Jelšavou sa skončila roku 1686, keď Habsburgovci hranicu z Gemera napokon odtlačili.

  7. 1720 · 1796–18011720 · 1796 – 1801 Koháry, and the biggest house in townKoharyovci a najväčší dom v meste

In 1720 the royal chamber sold the Muráň estate to Štefan Koháry, and his family held it for the rest of the century; the castle itself had burned in 1702 and was never rebuilt, so the lordship was run from the valley floor. Between 1796 and 1801 Mikuláš Koháry built the manor house on the edge of Jelšava: four wings, three storeys, allegorical paintings inside, and far larger than the town required. In the following century it passed by marriage to the Saxe-Coburg family. It is the building visitors photograph today, and it is a ruin — failing roof and windows, its restoration discussed for years without result.Roku 1720 predala kráľovská komora muránske panstvo Štefanovi Koharymu a jeho rod ho držal po zvyšok storočia; samotný hrad roku 1702 vyhorel a už ho nikto neobnovil, panstvo sa teda spravovalo z dna doliny. V rokoch 1796 – 1801 postavil Mikuláš Kohary na okraji Jelšavy kaštieľ: štyri krídla, tri podlažia, alegorické maľby vnútri a oveľa väčší, než mesto potrebovalo.

  8. 1880 · 18941880 · 1894 MagnesiteMagnezit

Magnesite was identified in the hills around Jelšava in 1880, and in 1894 the first magnesite works on the territory of present-day Slovakia was built here, at a place called Teplá voda. Magnesite is burned at high temperature to make magnesia, the refractory lining that steel furnaces and cement kilns cannot work without — an unglamorous material that every steel industry has to buy. The deposits here turned out to be among the more important in Europe. Almost everything about modern Jelšava follows from that one mineral lying under this particular valley.Magnezit našli v kopcoch okolo Jelšavy roku 1880 a roku 1894 tu postavili prvý magnezitový závod na území dnešného Slovenska, v polohe Teplá voda. Nie je to efektná surovina, no kúpiť si ju musí každé oceliarstvo.

  9. 1918 · 19231918 · 1923 A company town in CzechoslovakiaTovárenské mesto v Československu

Jelšava became part of Czechoslovakia in 1918, and in 1923 the magnesite works went into full industrial production with eight kilns and its own rail sidings. From then on the town's population, its housing and the shape of its day were set by shift patterns at the plant, and labour was drawn in from the villages of the valley. This is what a company town actually means: not that the company owned everything, but that when the works did well the town did well — and that there was no second answer when it did not.

  10. 2 November 1938 – 21 January 19452. novembra 1938 – 21. januára 1945 Five and a half years in HungaryPäť a pol roka v Maďarsku

The First Vienna Award of 2 November 1938 gave southern Slovakia to Hungary, and the new border ran through Jelšava itself: the town was annexed and spent the war as a Hungarian frontier town. That single line on a map decides most of what follows. The Slovak National Uprising of August 1944 was a Slovak affair on the far side of the border and never reached Jelšava. Romanian troops fighting alongside the Red Army took Jelšava on 21 January 1945.Prvá viedenská arbitráž z 2. novembra 1938 pripojila južné Slovensko k Maďarsku a nová hranica prešla priamo Jelšavou: mesto zabrali a celú vojnu prežilo ako maďarské pohraničné mestečko. Táto jediná čiara na mape rozhoduje o takmer všetkom, čo nasleduje. Slovenské národné povstanie z augusta 1944 bolo slovenskou vecou za hranicou a do Jelšavy nikdy nedosiahlo. Jelšavu obsadili 21. januára 1945 rumunské jednotky bojujúce po boku Červenej armády.

  11. 1948 · 1968–19901948 · 1968 – 1990 Nationalised, and garrisonedZnárodnená a s posádkou

After 1948 the magnesite mine and works were nationalised and enlarged, blocks of flats went up, and the plant became the reason the town existed at all. Jelšava also acquired something it had not asked for: from 1968, after the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia, a Soviet garrison was stationed here, and it stayed until 1990. Forty years of planning left the town with one large employer, one skill and very little else — which is exactly the position it was in when the planning stopped. Štyridsať rokov plánovania zanechalo mesto s jedným veľkým zamestnávateľom, jednou zručnosťou a takmer ničím iným — a presne v tejto pozícii ho plánovanie opustilo.

  13. since 1993od roku 1993 One mineral, one valleyJedna surovina, jedna dolina

In independent Slovakia the works at Jelšava, together with the plant a few kilometres up the valley at Lubeník, still put this small Gemer town among Europe's larger producers of refractory magnesia. That is very nearly the whole industry of the district, which makes it fragile: when the steel and cement markets soften, the entire valley feels it at once. Around the town, though, lies some of the best country in Slovakia — the Muránska planina National Park, the Gothic village churches of Gemer with their medieval wall paintings, and the caves and gorges of the Slovak Karst beyond them.V samostatnom Slovensku zaraďuje závod v Jelšave spolu s prevádzkou pár kilometrov vyššie v Lubeníku toto malé gemerské mesto medzi väčších európskych výrobcov žiaruvzdorných magnezitových materiálov. Okolie mesta pritom patrí k najkrajším kútom Slovenska — Národný park Muránska planina, gotické dedinské kostolíky Gemera so stredovekými nástennými maľbami a za nimi jaskyne a tiesňavy Slovenského krasu.
