In 1552 King Ferdinand I granted Jelšava the right of the sword — the right to try serious crimes in its own court and to carry out death sentences. It sounds grim, and it was, but for a town of the period it was a mark of real standing: a place with the sword right ran its own justice instead of sending its people before a lord's court. The grant came at the worst possible moment. Two years later the Ottomans took the fortress of Fiľakovo, and the frontier arrived at Jelšava's door.Roku 1552 udelil kráľ Ferdinand I. Jelšave právo meča — teda právo súdiť ťažké zločiny vlastným súdom a vykonávať tresty smrti.
