Jelšava became part of Czechoslovakia in 1918, and in 1923 the magnesite works went into full industrial production with eight kilns and its own rail sidings. From then on the town's population, its housing and the shape of its day were set by shift patterns at the plant, and labour was drawn in from the villages of the valley. This is what a company town actually means: not that the company owned everything, but that when the works did well the town did well — and that there was no second answer when it did not.Roku 1918 sa Jelšava stala súčasťou Československa a roku 1923 rozbehol magnezitový závod plnú priemyselnú prevádzku s ôsmimi pecami a vlastnými vlečkami.
