The best-known man these schools produced first arrived as a pupil. Matej Bel, born in 1684 at Očová in the same county, studied at the Banská Bystrica gymnasium from 1695 and matriculated here in 1704; in 1708 he came back as its deputy head and in 1710 as its rector, teaching oriental languages and preaching in the Lutheran church. He later moved to Pressburg — today's Bratislava — and spent his life on the Notitia Hungariae novae (1735–1742), a county-by-county description of the whole kingdom: its rivers, its towns, its people, its mines. It is still where anyone studying eighteenth-century Slovakia begins. He died in 1749, and the university in this city carries his name.
